I was wondering how many other folks on this forum catch hogs with dogs? Here in Texas it is kind of a way of life and it sure is fun.

First , welcome to JHO. Always nice to have another Texan in here. There are a few Texas hog hunters in here, but not many dog hunters. Satchmo has hunted hogs with dogs and stuck em' with a knife as well as a few others if I remember. I want to give it a try here before long myself.

Well I start catching them as soon as deer season is over and quit when it starts getting to hot to go. I never mind taking new folks with me. Rules are simple. No guns, drugs, or alcohol. During the really cold months we catch them about 95% of the time. Do most of the hunting about 2 hours south of Dallas.

P.S. And thanks for the welcome.

I do. The dog hunter forum is pretty slow though. Not too many people on here run dogs but thats fine by me. Dog hunters in Cali kind-of have a bad name. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>

Same here. Once the grass all dries out and the dogs do more sneezing and blowing from the stickers, than smelling, I pretty much hang it up for a few months. Deer season starts in August here anyway so it works out pretty well. Welcome to the site.

I've seen it before but don't have a subscription. My name comes from the fact that it's my favorite thing to say....and I like to say it at least a few times a week..."Well, sounds like he's bayed solid". What more could you want out of life?

I run my dogs on hogs year 'round. As bayedsolid mentioned, you've got to watch out for foxtails out here during the summer. I learned the lesson the hard way, as my best and favorite dog of all time died from inhaling a foxtail.

I try to avoid areas with a lot of foxtails whenever I can or I coonhunt my dogs along the levees and in the riverbottoms during the drier times of the year in order to minimize the risk.

There are more hoghunters that use dogs in this state than what might be expected. It is easily the most effective method and accounts for a disproportionate segment of filled tags.

I've hunted hogs with dogs in Texas, and know what you mean, Tx_hoghunter, about it being a way of life.

Tx_hoghunter, welcome. I think there is only a handfull of us dog men on this site. I'm fortunate not to have to contend with fox tails and other grasses.
nothing but redwood forest here mostly ferns or briars for under growth. with 60+ inches of rain during the winter, It gets to wet to go hunting. thats when I head your way, I go to Texas atleast once a winter. Its nice to hunt country gentle enuff to make it to more than one bay a day.

BayedSolid: I have done some work up around your area. that looks like some good hog country, especially for being able to see the dogs work.

I ran hog dogs for about 30 years, mostly in the Pearsall-Batesville area. I had access to several big farms but gradually got squeezed out. Its a hoot.

Yea, we definatley don't have to crawl through the brush nearly as much as I used to over on the coast. There is definately thick spots and rough draws but you can usually just go around.
