Hog Hunting????

I would like to someday sneak out and kill a hog or two maybe, where would I be most likely to have an opportunity to kill one, and after killing one, can they be as easily processed as a deer??? I have processed my own deer several times, but am not so sure about a hog. Closer is always better, but I wouldn't shy away from a nice day's drive to get to a place to hunt, and stay a couple of days, then return home. Any advice or suggestions????

dmorehouse, Not sure where you live but will be starting our hog hunting within the next week or two. except we don't killem we catchem. Use dogs etc. It's about the most fun a bunch of rednecks can have. Also prepare to put your 4 wheeler through some pretty tuff riding, a lot of times about all that is showing is the seat when crossing some of these South Arkansas bottoms. I took a pretty good hog back during deer season. I was boared (pun intended) as deer werre not moving so I figured the next best thing was a hog. Here is a pic of my hog and a couple of one hunt last year

If any of you guys out thee are close enough and would like to go on a hunt with us some Saturday let me know.

DMorehouse, probably best bet for an out-of-stater is Texas or South Carolina. GA and FL have some good pay-to-play hunts as well. CA is great, but kinda pricey. Of course, you could always take Qhog up on his offer in Arkansas.

Those are electrifying pics, not only for the nice size hogs, but for the sheer challenge of the terrain(errr......mud, goop, swamp bogs) & the manhandling of the hogs. Ayyyyy........excitement galore!!! Except I am past middle age & would rather spend my years without too much injury. For you young fellers, Whoopppeeedoooo!!! larrysogla.

Thanks guys, It really is more fun than you can shake a stick at....Yeah we told them dern dogs to steer clear of the swamp, but they is hard headed. Had two hogs on the otherside and closest route was a straight line

Oh larrysogla If you can ride and run (walk fast) in the woods a little bit you could make it. So far we haven't had any major injuries....

Those are nice looking hogs, not too ugly like the pure Russian boars that are mean & nasty looking. Congrats again.

Back when I was a young boy there were no supermarkets, all the chickens at the market were live chickens. Sometimes my mom would ask me to slit the throat on the chicken for our meal, de-feather it(with boiling water poured on it, whereupon the bloodless? chicken would jump up & run), cut it into pieces & we then would cook it.
I kind of lost the novelty on barehands/knife hunts because of all these kitchen executions. I am purely a gun hunter, but I am sure it is pure adrenaline to barehands these hogs. larrysogla.

larry, just so no one thinks we are total savages.

We catch most of these and tie them up. The couple pigs in these pics are alive today as far as I know. A friend of mine has a large area he will release these into and then if someone wants a pay hog hunt he will take them out to his place. Helps get rid of hogs on mine and others leases, he make a little money off the hired hunts.

I'm not much on sliting throats either....

Hey GHog,

That area looks awefully familiar. LOL We have some catch folks too. They should be gettin fired up here in the next couple of weeks. Me, I go but am generally the one who has the pistol or rifle just in case.

Sometimes those hogs will hit the river and the dogs will go right after them. Depending on the weather, water temp, and how fast the river is running we sometimes have to shoot the hog to keep the dogs safe. Also there are times when they pin up one of those really bad boars and if the dogs are at risk they will ask it be put down.

For the most part your right it is a hoot and not too terribly hard if you got some semi- open woods. Most of the area where the hogs get where we hunt is greenvine and blackberry thickets. I am sure you been there done that. LOL

Now that catch-em thing sounds like fun, I just don't know if I could do it right now, healing up a badly sprained ankle and all, but I have man handled a few deer in my day, wounded or road injured, and even took a 6pt down and broke his neck back about 10yrs. ago after a headshot went all wrong. I have a buddy who works on the road, and tells some stories about Hog-Catchin', and how much fun it is, sounds like something someday I'll have to try. We don't have many hogs here in Ohio, and I was looking for a place I could maybe get out and kill one in the spring, to pack a little meat in my freezer since my ankle took me out of the woods after only one deer this year, my freezer ain't full no more. Does Arkansas have a closed season on hogs??? And are there public hunting areas that would be productive if I were to go on a 2-3 day hunt with a couple of buddies??

D. I don't think there is really any season on hogs right now. We usually wait till a week or two after the gun deer seaon is over so we don't disturb anyone. As for public grounds with hogs I am sure there are some but I can't tell you how good they are. Most of our hunting is on private leases. Usually after Dec anyone with a lease will let you go on there to rid them of some hogs. If you have never seen an area where hogs have taken over you would be amazed at the damage they can do to your land. So everyone wants them gone....we love hunting them.....it's a nice combination.

41mag....yep know what you mean about the briars, hate it when the dogs are bayed 20yds from you in a bunch of stuff you can't even see 2 feet in front you. Oh the fun!!!!!!!!!

Georgia has a lot of national forest the is open for hogs during small game season. A nonresident would only have to have a hunting license not a big game. You have to use small game guns, bow or muzzle loader. There are also a lot of pay hunts here as well.

Are there any certain areas in GA that are better than others?? I lived in the Augusta area for four yrs. while in the Army, stationed at Ft. Gordon, but only saw one hog the whole time I was there, and I saw him while I was out fishing!!! I have a couple of buddies that would like to go and try to tag a couple of hogs. Any info would be appreciated.

Having not hog hunted in the past let me ask around and I will get back to you. I do know that north Ga mountains has more of the old Russian type but most of the public land is WMA. There is a magazine in Ga called GON (Georgia Outdoor NEws) that I get that has had some articals about hogs. Let me look. Tyler's Grandpa (nothing like that first grand kid)

Doug there use to be some good hunting around the Savannah NWR. I haven't hunted there in about 8 years, but always had good luck. They have a hunt in the middle of march for about a week,if u are going to hunt public land. I really wouldn't call thius place "public" it has only a few hunts a year. And u will probably need a boat to hunt the GA side of the river. I usually hunt the Waterhorn WMA in SC, but it doesnt have a hunt this time of year.
If u are diffently looking for meat u might try a pay hunt in GA or SC. Since u will be driving from up north, i know u are not just looking for a senic view.....lol. If u decide to come down this way let me know i will meet yall down there. Good Luck
