hog reports?

I'm going up to a friends hunting property that butts up against Lake San Antonio this weekend. We have gotten quail, dove and rabbits on this ranch many times but never seen a pig. My friend grows barley, has a stream and some mud hole areas and he says there are pigs but we've never seen them.

Usually we drive into the property but I'm starting to think that might be scaring the pigs off before we get there so we will try walking in this time.
Any good pig hunting tips and any reports from that area?

Are you sure the pigs aren't nocturnal? I hear that most of the pigs near Fort Hunter Leggit are....

theyre there. However with the rain we had last week winter has essentially moved in and the hogs will be moving around. Id be looking for the acorns dropping. The barley field shouldnt be in the ground at this time of year. If your partner has cattle on his property the barley should be long gone. I would be looking for fresh rooting under oak trees and thick cover. The hogs may or may not be around but they are not far.

Not sure about your spot, but first and last light is when you will see them.
If it's private (as in no completion) and there is food, water and cover they will most likely be there. On Camp Bob or FHL(or any public land) they tend to be more nocturnal, yet since both bases have limited public hunting access the game is less disturbed.
Usually when I hunt on private ranches, we are always ready the minute we go thru the gate, as they can be anywhere, even in the open.

Good luck, there are loads of pigs in Monterey County and having a ranch to hunt is always a good thing...

the property has a small creek that runs through it and the recent rains probably filled a couple of holes that are there. I saw wallow marks in the dirt of these holes last spring when we last hunted there. I imagine the barley is gone by now just because it was coming up in the spring. He doesn't run cattle on the property. He plants sunflower and barley just for hunting. It's a great place for quail, dove and rabbits. We hope to add pigs to the list this weekend. We'll get out there earlier and stay later.
