Just curious I havent seen a post yet on here about anyone hunting hogs with dogs, not sure where most of yall are from , but if you ever get a chance to go hunting hogs behind dogs, curr dogs, catahoulas, hounds , what ever your preferrance you will change your mind forever about hog hunting. Its a good time and very fun and a rush to watch these dogs trail and bay a hog then send in the catch dogs to stop the hog then we go in tip the hog and tie it up or kill it on the spot what ever the needs are. Just curious why I havent seen any posts yet , Is there any other hog dog hunters on here besides the few i have seen so far.

RF,

Scroll down, or try the search, and you'll find several discussions from this topic.  You'll find that there are plenty of folks on this list who stand on both sides of the hound hunting field.

Personally, although I've only done it twice (for hogs), I didn't find it all that great.  I found the kill about as exciting as when I used to help out at hog killing time back home in North Carolina.  I'm sure everyone's mileage may vary, but it sure won't make a convert out of me.

Not knocking people who do enjoy it, but it sure ain't for everybody.  Ya'll can have it.

Robert I havent seen many folks who run dogs on this site.  Theres a few though.  I agree with you, theres not many things I enjoy better than being behind a pack of good dogs and hearing them open up on a hog.  I was converted after my first trip.  Different strokes fer different folks I guess.

Ya Kevin yer right not many around here guess Ill have to hang around and help these fellers out with their hog dog hunting questions and such , I seen a few fellers from the other boards that use dogs on hogs , and I agree its not for everone it takes a differeant bred of hunter to run in behind the dogs and leg a hog and tie him up. I looked around here and seen a few posts about hog dogs and others just askin about catahoulas both I know alot about , lol its all I know , I dont hunt nuttin else . so I guess Ill stay around till these fellers get tired of me posting about my ole pack of hog dogs but from the looks of it they like to hear good hunting stories like we do . So Ill spin a yarn or 2 and tell the stories of crazy hog hunters chasing our dogs into the battle of Hog and dogs leggin them ole nasty baors and tieing them up . If nothinh else the will be entertained and think Im plum crazy. Look forward to posting in the future . Yall have a good un, till next time.

Robert, give us a discription of how you go in and leg a hog and tie it. Then what happens? Do you Kosherize them or do you shoot it?

Robert:

Welcome to Jesse's.  You'll find a lot of differant hunting types here.  A lot of us are from California, where it's illegal to bait, and running dogs is mostly done for bear. So we're not familiar with some of the hunting practices in other parts of the country.  But there are a more than a few guys that run pigs with dogs here, and even some guys that trap them.  We even got a Canadian buddy who hunts wolves, and a Irishman who hunts varmints in No. Ireland.  That's whats great about the site.  Bring on the stories.  I'm sure we'll enjoy them.

Well it depends on where Im at and who I got with me. If I am in a place where I can come back to hunt anytime I cut the boars and make them into Barrs, no more baby making just eating, If it is a sow  most of the time we will keep her either for a pen or 1 of the guys will want to eat her, but we try to leave as many of the sows running if we are in a place where we can hunt regular if not the we harvest all the hogs.  But when I say I leg them , all that is tipping them over and tieing their legs up. So them we can load them up on the 4 wheller or drap them out to the trailer or truck. This is just ME and the folks I hunt with , I cant speak for ever hog hunter out there.

Thanks Bishop fer the welcome and Slugblaster, I dont carry a gun at all , If I have got to kill a hog I have my knife just filp and stab its heart out .  And I have read sum very intresting hunting articles, some very good ones. I cant write as purdy as sum of these other fellers but I can give it a whirl. And like I said before this is the only hunting I do , I spend all my time with My family and my dogs , and raisning and training the dogs is a family affair so Im always busy.

Hey RF and Kevin,

I live in South Texas and I grew up hunting all kinds of different animals, but by far the most exciting is going after hogs with dogs.  We chase them with currs and then send the pits in to lock on them.  We rarely tie'em, we usually stab'em and drag them out to a truck.  I always have people I know that want a hog to BBQ.  I even have a few regular farmers that pay me to come out and kill as many hogs as I can.  I have spent many of hunts starting at about 8 or 9 p.m. and not getting back on the road till the sun comes up.  Hearing a dog yelp at a cornered hog off in the distance really gets my heart pumping.  Anybody that says killing hogs with dogs is too easy or not fun, obviously has not ever walked up on a 200# boar trying to fight off 4 dogs and be able to get into position to stab them in the heart.  It will surely get your adrenaline pumping.

Sounds like good clean fun. I,ve seen a Keith Warren tape where they are in Texas doing just as you described Robert and BD, and it looks like a blood pumpin hunt. I think what turns others off to it is that in CA they charge $500 and the first night the dogs get on a hog and the guide says there he is shoot it. And the hunts over. Most guys want to do some glassing spot and stalk and take the shot. And they dont have the balls to go in with a knife to the heart. I don't think I'm ready for that but I'd sure like to find out.

WOW, its hard to belive what folks will charge for a hunt, I go alot with freinds and folks I meet on the boards and We have a blast , For most its their first time behind a pack of dogs, for me its just another day to watch my dogs do thier jobs . Its just alot of fun and all have a good time and we get to watch and listen to the dogs work and the new guys get to go in and help tie it or if they want to eat it then they get to kill it.I wished yall was alittle closer that way when it cools off I would invite yall for a hunt.Ill look around and see what I could do later in the year when it gets cool that way I can run the dogs all day and into the evening.  Yall Have a Good One.

RF/Currman Knows what he's doing allright.

I've met him and Kev_a at the BDO I & II(Big Dog Outing).

They've got some good dogs, and they will flat get after them hogs.

We didnt killem, they jumped in and grabbed a back leg, flipped the hogs and tied them up. I tink the biggest so far has been the 361 pound sow they had to fight in the river in the freezing cold. But they jumped in and eventually took control of the situation.

Some of the tales they will tell may seem a little TALL, but believe me they are good fellers and will tell you like it is(or was).

I'll be seein' Kev_a at BDO III in a couple of weeks, but RF cant come with us this time.

I know he and his dogs will be missed. (who's gonna keep tusky straight?).

See ya'll later.

thanks,
Hunter Claus

Bring on the reinforcements!!!  I'm glad to see the population of hogdog hunters increase on this forum.  I was starting to get lonely!

There is nothing more exhilerating than having a rough hog bayed by good dogs.  I can't imagine my life without dogs and hogs.

Welcome to Jesse's, guys.  I look forward to your posts.

Regards,
RIFLEMAN
