This sounder was about 150 yards out. Nineteen hogs including four shooters (males over 150#), six females & nine piglets. No shots today. Our freezers are full. I have two pig tags left out of the five I have available this year. We have donated about 300# of pork to various families in need. I shoot'em, "chunk" it out ( skinned out back straps, hams & shoulders bone-in, rib/neck meat for grinding) and drop off the meat at the ranch house. The foreman notifies the next family on the waiting list. I have limited myself to males only.

Kudos on giving to needy families. That’s the way it should be done.

Yeah, some of these folks have been hit pretty hard with this Wuhan virus stuff. Lost their businesses & "rainy day" savings. These are some very proud people. They don't want government handouts but they do appreciate a little neighborly kindness. I'm sure, if the positions were reversed, they'd do the same.

Ever get them within 70 yards? All I got is my slug setup and so far ethically I don't wanna do past 70.
Yes. I generally use the spot-and-stalk approach. Wind direction is critical. I stalk with my face into the wind. I have a 6" piece of yellow sewing thread taped to my rifle barrel to monitor wind direction. Hogs are nearsighted (can't clearly see stationary objects until they get within 7-8 yards), have the equivalent of human hearing but their sense of smell cannot be overstated. I watched a sounder of 9 pigs home in on the scent of a dead cow carcass from about 2 miles downwind. Phenomenal. Last winter I killed a 200# hog as a sounder approached a mineral block. Range - 7 yards. A 140gr. Barnes XPB bullet from a .357 punched through his skull right between his eyes. The hogs were ranged at 800 yards when I spotted them & set up my stalk. 20210210_114132-01.jpeg

Well that certainly gets my hopes up man. However I'll be chasing those public land piggos as I do not have a private land connection yet. I heard the public land pugs have X2 senses tho. Hopefully I'll be posting on here in the coming month or two. If you know anyone who wants rid of some on their land I'd be more than happy to oblige

A little advice. Use a good pair of binoculars (10x42s are ideal) with a tripod if you can. You can cover a lot of ground from a vantage point without burning up a lot of energy. Watch the wind direction. Even if animals are too far away for a stalk, study them. Watch their movements, make a note of how far they travel when not being pushed. You'll be surprised.

do you still start with a hot breakfast at Keen Café ? I have not been up there in a long while. Now that my parents moved to Tx, I don't really go up the mountain much. That and my friends dad sold that Don Hart Cabin property. I hear it was to a fireman. But either way I lost my access to that crazy BLM. Hope all is well with you up there. Its been a odd year. Glad for family and good health.
Take care
KT
