I was talking with a buddy who hunts hogs on a regular basis. We were chatting about a property I hunt in central california. I got a call from the landowner the other day. This property is either real good (depending on conditions) or real bad. She told me the hogs are out in force right now. The topic came up on how many pigs would you put down if you came up on a decent size herd. If you have a few pig tags in your back pocket, would you take one or shoot until you fill all of your tags? Just wanna see what everyone thinks about this topic.

If I was hunting for meat, just for myself, then I would probably stop at 2, that would last me the whole year in pork. But if this guy will let you take as many as you want, then i'd be asking your friends if they want any wild hog meat and bang away.

Is the property owner trying to clear them off the land completely? If so, take a friend or two (I'm available my dear buddy) and lets clean house. But, like Mel said if it were for just me I'd stop at two.

Well since the cost of tags went up, I only buy two at a time any how. So, I'd bag two, and come back another time. But, I would defenitely bring along a few friends.

I have this template and article with directions on how to make your own pigskin football that American Hunter put out receantly. I would most deffinetly mess up the first one so would probably need two or more to get it right.

If the freezer gets too full too fast then I guess I would have to go buy another.

The wife and I made a big sausage/gravey and bisquit breakfast for about 15 friends last year and they have been asking lately when the next one is. I suppose we would have to give them a date.

Fill your tags if she want's em gone. It would be better if you had a few buddies to take along or some families lined up that could use the meat. I hate to see it go to waste! On the flip side, you ever gut three or more pigs in day? I haven't but I can immagine it would be a lot of work!

If you want someone to tag along on a hunt let me know!

If the terrain is thick brush, I doubt anyone can down more than two pigs before they all disappear. The most pigs I have downed from a group is 3 and that's on open grass hills. After the first shot they scattered. With only four more shells in the gun, one has got to be a good shot at running pigs in order to connect with the last four shells. By the time you get the clip reloaded, the pigs may have disappeared over the next ridge or gone out of range.

If this is a place you want to keep hunting, I'd limit it to a couple, tops. If you hit 'em too hard, you're liable to never see another one in daylight.

On the other hand, if you're being asked to clear 'em off the property, then shoot what you can (legally). Bring a couple of trusted buddies, and let them pop a couple too.

I'll stop at 2 or 3 but if the owner want's them clear of her property, I'll bring some friends along. I'll volunteer, heck I'll even gut all of them for you, I'm a medical professional so I'm very handy with a knife. I'm also from Orange county too so if you need a volunteer, just holler...weekdays, weekends.

Sounds like there are plenty of people wanting to help if you need it...

I would stick to what I have freezer room for, unless I could get annother freezer.

If it is an eradication hunt, I would invite some of the good ol' boys from this JHO website who are willing & able to assist you. Lots of responsible huntin' folks in this JHO 'site. Anyways, good luck & straight shooting. larrysogla.

Bryan.......I had the wonderful opportunity to take multiple hogs over the past few years on a friends ranch. I think you probably remember that pic I posted a while back of the most hogs I took in one day, 4 of em (all small guys, 60-120 lbs.). While that was a good day and I'd do it again in a heartbeat, with larger hogs I have a different view.....

If the question is how many hogs would you take in a day, I don't think I'd take more than 3-4 if a lot of dragging is involved or if any of them had any size to em. You can only eat so much hog per year (unless you're a megacarnivore like SDHNTR, who can't seem to keep his freezer full no matter what!), and I'd put that probably around a couple medium sized hogs for an average family (especially if you take other critters like deer later in the year). On top of that, another hog maybe for your parents/in-laws/sister/bro and that should do it, I think. A few years ago I took 9 hogs, and the butchering costs got to be ridiculous.....I was being way too overzealous in giving the meat away to friends and family, none of whom paid for any of the butchering since they were only able to take 10-15 lbs. of meat for themselves. Lesson learned there.........also a little Butchering 101 on the last couple hogs.

Three to four pigs per day per guy is a bunch of skinnin and guttin and haulin and dumpin the skins and etc., and especially if you take them in the central valley during the summer months when the meat eating bees are out. The more hogs you have, the longer it's going to take to skin em. And the longer it's takin you to skin the beasts, the more bees that collect to hinder your progress. Vicious circle! But also a nice problem to have, just don't seem quite that nice at the time or if you grab a bee when skinning (it feels like a sledgehammer hit your finger when they sting ya!).

All that said, I'm ready when you are and I'll drive and buy lunch at the Inn :) Take care, Myke

I would only take one or two, as I don't like wasting game and I only have limited room in my freezer. It is a nice problem to have though! Like all these others, I'd be happy to help!

Bryan,
I hunt in Central Cal usually within an hour of Bakersfield. Is this ranch toward Glennville? I'm just wondering if I've been on it. It sounds like one I know. Let me know if you want company.
