I am new to hog hunting.
Can anyone tell me the habits of hogs in the rain. Do they hunker down? Feed? Move?
I am heading to Lake Sonoma next week and the weather is not looking so hot. Cool, not cold, but definitely rain.
Any info could help. If anyone has any tips for the area around Yorty Creek, I am all ears and grateful.
Cheers

Like an idiot, I plan on braving the elements on a solo hunt on Lake Sonoma this weekend. I've only ever hunted there once several years ago, and that was at the southern end of the lake. I'll let you know how it goes.

Growing up, my dad had a small cattle ranch that had a decent population of pigs that we would hunt. In light to moderate rain they would more or less maintain their daily patterns. In the real nasty weather they seemed to hole up and wait out the storm. However, they would be out feeding heavily just as soon as the weather broke. Keep in mind that this was private land with minimal hunting pressure. I'm not sure how well that translates to heavily hunted public grounds.

Best of luck!

Slyck is right. They will hold tight in a hard rain, but be out rooting their snouts off right after is subsides. It really doesnt bother them that much. If its windy, forget about it.

Looking forward to hearing how your hunts go. I'm hoping to make it up to Lake Sonoma in a week or so to chase hogs.

I agree that hunting hogs in the rain isn't a great idea, but they do come out afterward to warm up and get some food. If I see rain all night that clears up in the morning, I'm heading to the ranch!

I have researched and basically came up with "Don't waste your time if it is windy"
So taking a shot in the dark here, I would venture to say like many Game animals it messes with to many of their senses hearing, smelling, and being low to the ground it could mess with them seeing. I don't believe its because they don't like the wind because it makes them cold. Correct me if I am wrong, it wouldn't be the first time or the last

Wind because they smell ya or wind because they don't like wind

A wind affects most prey mammals the same way

A strong wind creates a lot of noise covering the noise of potential predators and muffling communications between heard animals.
A strong wind creates a lot of extra movement masking the movement of potential predators.
A strong wind may gust but it doesn’t swirl much so a downwind approach becomes a big advantage to predators.

Altogether it just makes them nervous so they tend to stay put.

Wind is no good, they hunker down and won't move. I killed a hog in October that was during the rain.

Dam Mel. He looks like a razorback. Nice hog. I still got to get out there with you some day. Congrats on the pig.

Try packing a small umbrella. I got one at the gas station that fits in my back pocket. A red light means stop but if you watch one long enough someone will eventually run it.
