Honing in bow skills for tough steep elevation living california boar pigs...

Do California hogs react to the sound of a bowstring by ducking or jumping before the arrow hits:
1. Every time?
2. More than 50% of the time?
3. Less than 50% of the time
or
4. Never?

From my experience shooting with my bow I would have to say 4., never jumped it. Haven't taken from distances outside of 5-10 yds with less than a 65 lb draw so maybe a lunge or duck on distances further or with lower draw weights and etc. Also, haven't taken any bigger than average pigs, which may be wiser than the average and react faster.

Go to Youtube and type in "bowhunt hogs", you will see hundreds of videos of bow shots on pigs..............from what I have seen pigs dont jump the string, too low to the ground, short non-compressing legs compared to deer................Don

your funny Criley, u dont have to worry about pigs jumpin the string if u whack them while there a sleep in there beds.LOL

dtj6ppc, Criley already has an awesome youtube video he recored himself whacking a pig a few months ago at L.S..

i think pigs are pretty skittish, out of all my encounters they usally react faster then u can draw, pull or get off the shot on your bow and if they our already on gaurd and they hear anything they dont like they are gone and if they see anything they dont like there gone in a split second, one of the only game animals i hunt that can do a 360 and burn rubber and dissipear like hudini right in front of u with your bow ready to go. thats what i like about pig hunting it isn't a carp shoot, its work to score a pig most of the time. now a whitetail deer is differant the are the masters of string jumppin......tra

Never had a hog jump the string, even out to 40 yards. My first bow was pretty loud and not particularly fast either.

Ive shot at a few in my day. It has not happened very often but i have had it happen a time or two over the years while shooting at an alert lone hog. They have very fast reflexes and are very agile. If they are feeding or rummaging around in a pack you can purity much know its not going to happen.

O i marked <50% because i have had it happen but it has been no where near 50%, Its just been three or four hogs over about 30 years of chaseing them.

Not to often but it has happened to me a few times. More to less when they knew something wasn't right, and were getting nervous at the shot. But if there fat, dumb and happy feeding away, or per occupied with something, its very rare to have one jump a string..

If one does, its more a "bolt" then a "jump". It's usually a hit further back then intend, vs a high hit, like you get on a deer.

Haven't seen one jump or fly yet. Have seen a few wearing lipstick though.

IMHO I would say it depends, have the hogs had alot or any recent pressure? Been a full moon? Is it breeding time? I've had it both, jumping the string as close as 30 yards, then again I've had to kick them to wake em up, so I didn't feel so guilty. Like romanarcher says, its not a carp shoot. Archery hoggin is a non-stop learning curve.

DISCLAIMER: some of the things I say may be unfiltered, offensive, or even complete B.S.

I've never seen one jump, but yes bolt or run because of movement or instinct to run.
