Cool looking pig. Why is the kid positioned 10 yards behind the hog? Always makes me wonder.

The same reason you're positioned so far in front of the Golden Gate.

And yes, I apologize in advance.

Yeah-No, that person in the picture is our very own prostaffer, Arrowslinger. It was taken on a recent trip to San Fran when he went "shopping" with his girl.

I'd be more impressed w/ the kidd killing a 100lb WILD hog.[/b]

Why would you be more impressed if he killed a 100lb Wild hog? smaller target? I think the kid had been given the opportunity to hunt and he killed a massive wild pig. Would you have been more impressed if DAVID killed a midget rather than GOLIATH?
<

Why isn't this one WILD??? According to the article, it was a wild pig. What is the official definition of WILD pig?

Even if you call it FERAL, by Websters's definition it is WILD ("1 : of, relating to, or suggestive of a wild beast <feral teeth> <feral instincts>
2 a : not domesticated or cultivated : WILD b : having escaped from domestication and become wild " )

I just know that if given the same opportunity as the kid had, I would have attempted to harvest it and if I did, would have had stood behind it and had my picture taken with it, just as he did (I think a couple of guys need new spectacles and/or new and bigger monitors if they think he is standing way behind it, he is leaning against it!!! )

Just my

New rule - "Wild pig", "Wild Boar", "Wild Hog", "Wild" anything means wild born, maybe even 2nd generation wild born.. Not some flop eared domestic fattened on fish food in a pen and then released/escaped to be shot later. They would be classified as "Feral/Escaped".

Yeah the kid shot a big pig with a big gun - congrats.. But this PR campaign is more than a little ridiculous.

Dosen't matter if the kid is standing 30' or a 100' behind the pig, 1050 lbs. is one huge porker. Thats almost the same weight of my horse.

Look up the word "WILD" in your dictionary, then you might understand...and yes, had David killed a miniature Goliath, i'd be very much impressed. What a great point.

story about same pig on Outdoor Wire---(it had the same photo,)

HOGZILLA- The ugly truth

When it was announced last week that Jamison Stone, an eleven year old Alabama boy, had shot what was thought to be the largest wild feral hog ever recorded, most of us reacted with our typical skepticism. After all, we've seen lots of alleged records fail to stand up to scrutiny.

It appears, however, this is one event that's considerably better documented than the usual claims to records. The big pig was photographed, weighed (on certified scales) and made available for examination with measurements.

Here's the photo that's been widely distributed of Jamison and the critter:

This picture didn't do much to assuage my doubts about its veracity. After all, the kid's in perfect focus while the pig seems a bit fuzzy - usually a hint that someone's not quite as good at faking photographs as they'd think. But photos of the boy, his father, and the gigantic pig hanging from a front-loader seem to take care of the faked concerns.

Be that as it may, the reason I'm fired up about the story isn't because the kid took a gigantic hog, it's the gigantic responses he's getting in return.

Field & Stream has been "chronicling" the saga as it has unfolded, with F&S's resident firearms observer and pundit Dave Petzal, wondering how - and why- a kid would be: 1) turned loose in the woods with a .50 caliber handgun, or, 2) allowed to hunt when he's obviously not a very good shot. Petzal raises a good point, it took about $100 worth of ammo and nearly three hours for the kid to finally put the pig down for the count.

Regardless, his family put up a website (www.monsterpig.com) that was designed to celebrate the event.

In the spirit of fairness, they also included a place for negative comments - and boy, have they been an ugly glimpse into the nastier side of people.

There, vegans, animal rights supporters and a general crowd of jerks has pilloried an eleven-year-old-boy for what may be one of the biggest accomplishments in his life.

Here's a cleaned up sampling of what people have said:

"You are a typical American Christian, fat and eager to kill. See you in hell, son."

"Your parents are great parents letting you run around with a gun at the age of 11. What's next? I suppose taking it to school and seeing how many classmates you can knock off? I would have been impressed if you would have killed it in fair game......but you went the cowardly way and used a gun.Fatty!!!!"

"You've got a great career as a killer ahead of you! I hope that one day soon, you'll decide to kill your father & then youself."
Nigel Clements San Francisco, CA (nothing like having enough pride in your writing to sign your name and address, right?)

The others are a bit more "colorful" in their description of the boy, his family, Alabama, and anyone who hunts. Without going into details, it's safe to say that the wonderful people who wrote these things about an eleven -year-old kid, are the same types who love to attack anyone who disagrees with them about anything. Anonymously, of course, and with very little of the tolerance they claim to have for animals. To them, one wild pig is obviously worth more than an eleven-year old honor student who happens to enjoy hunting.

Not everyone hunts.

Not everyone fishes.

Not everyone enjoys camping, hiking, biking, rafting or reading, it would seem.

And, no, not everyone is a carnivore.

But being - or not being - any of these things makes anyone less of a human being or unworthy of the common respect we all need to show toward each other.

That's not to say, however, we should all tolerate everything that anyone says or does.

The pure nastiness and personal insults offered in the negative comments about Jamison Stone clearly demonstrate that some folks claiming a moral high ground on some issues are clearly lacking in basic social abilities as well as compassion and understanding.

Hunters are regularly pilloried and compared to lower life forms - simply because they hunt. Those comments normally come in the form of anonymous insults offered by people who lack the courage or conviction to sign their insults. Although I don't have much else positive to say about Nigel Clements of San Francisco, California, he at least had the "salt" to sign his stupid comments.

Of course, if some of those who wrote the nastier comments did sign their insults, they might find out their "convictions" aren't enough to protect them from the consequences of their insults. If they were making those comments from split lips with accompanying black eyes and contusions, they might carry more weight.

That's not likely, but it's certainly an idea worth considering, isn't it?
