Hogzilla, the legend grows

ALAPAHA, Georgia (AP) -- Around these parts, they are calling it Hogzilla: a 12-foot-long wild hog recently killed on a plantation and now quickly becoming a part of local legend.

The plantation's owner claims the hog weighed 1,000 pounds and had 9-inch tusks. But few people have actually seen the hog -- the only proof being a photo that shows the dead beast hanging from a rope.

Whether the hog ever actually existed or is some sort of Faulknerian myth, it has definitely been the topic of conversation in small towns across southern Georgia.

"People just back up and ask 'Is it real?' They can't believe that there's a hog that big in the woods," said Drew White, who has a copy of the photo on display at an auto parts store in Tifton, about 17 miles away.

Chris Griffin said he killed the beast last month at the River Oak Plantation, where he is a hunting guide, and has been showing off the picture around this small farming community ever since. The hog is nearly twice as long as the 6-foot-tall Griffin, who is seen standing next to it in the photo.

"They say 'Man, you look like a dwarf compared to that thing,"' he said Wednesday.

The picture is all Griffin has to back up his claims. He and Ken Holyoak, owner of the plantation, buried the beast on the property and did not want to hassle with slaughtering it since the meat of large feral hogs is typically not very good.

Holyoak said he decided that the hog's head also wasn't worth keeping because it was too large to mount on a wall. He said the head has the diameter of a tire on a compact car.

"We had to lift him with a backhoe," he said.

No one maintains official records on hog kills in Georgia. But Department of Natural Resources biologist Kent Kammermeyer, who helped write a booklet on feral-hog problems in the state, said he has never heard of one as large as Hogzilla.

Holyoak said the plantation's previous record was a 695-pound hog shot several years ago. Enough wild hogs roam Holyoak's plantation that he has made it a side business to allow people to hunt them, but he said "Hogzilla" was too big to let someone else shoot.

"We killed it because we didn't want to take a chance of him getting away. Somebody else would have shot it," he said.

Feral hogs, popularly known as wild hogs, are domestic hogs that escaped from farms and began living off the land. They lay waste to corn and peanut fields and deprive more than 100 species -- including squirrels and deer -- of food.

"It's a big problem and it's getting worse," Kammermeyer said. "If you have a lot of hogs, you're going to have problems. Hogs are very aggressive. They run deer off and they can be dangerous if wounded or cornered."

Holyoak said he had to climb into a deer stand a few years back to escape a raging hog that circled around for six hours, foaming at the mouth and snapping at branches.

"They say bears get mad when you mess with their babies," Holyoak said. "Hogs don't need a reason to get mad and come after you."

Maybe he has a long tail. I recently saw a domestic hog that the rancher claimed weighed 900 pounds. He was at least that big.

Oh, gimme a break! A hog's head takes less space than your average deer mount and one that size would have serious bragging rights.

The pictur would have been more believable if part of the guy was infront of the pig and part behind. If you look at his right hand it appears to be resting on the pigs hoof but I think it is staged myself. his right arm doesn't look natural. I'd bet the pig is 4 to 5 feet away from the guy. But I could be wrong. I have staged a few photos myself. Fish are real easy. just hold them at arms length and be taking the picture at short range. makes a 5 pounder look like a 50 pounder.

I agree with Bearmage. When I first saw this, that was my first thought. he's standing behind it, and has the geometry at work for him. Gimme a break. If it was a record, he would at least have weighed it before he buried it. And had it confirmed. Who, in their right minds, would bury a potential record, and THEN claim it? Better still who, in their right minds, would expect anyone to believe it? It's a big hawg, do doubt about it, but 12 feet? Nope.

I can't see those locals even buying his story! The picture would tell them the guy is full of BS.

Picture looks ok to me.

But 12' I think is about 2 to 3' overkill. And like the rest of you guys said "Who in there right mind would dig a hole and throw away a world record". If it is true then my answer to that is that guy on the right hand side of that pig.

That's what I was thinking. It's definately a big arse pig. But if the guy is in the business of selling pig hunts, you would think he would want to verify a bonified record in order to draw in more hunters and be able to charge more money.

I think he dug the hole so he could climb in and make the hog look bigger. Why would you need to get a backhoe and spend all that time digging and burying when the coyotes and buzzards would pick it apart in a few days? Maybe if this was on 2 acres in front of your house.....but a hunting ranch? Something seems a little fishy. There's no denying it's definately big but I think they doubled the weight to get 1000# and added 5 feet in length. Besides, if you shot a 1000#, 12 foot hog, domestic or not, don't you think most guys would take more than 1 picture before destroying the evidence?

the picture didn't turn out the size I wanted it, but I'm figuring that guy might be 6'.

So, based on that and the hog looks to be in front of him a little ways, I'm going to say 9' hog.

I say let the guy have his moment and exagerate a little. I mean we all know that that last hog we killed gains 5-10 pounds every time we tell the story of it.

Dig the S.O.B. up and find out. george perry holds the world record for large mouth based on a picture and a carcass. WHy not this one. But please tell the guys in georgia that this isn't the correct way to get your name in the book. It helps if you supply the actual animal.

Maybe he's standing far away from and someone is just dangling a muddy gopher in front of the camera.......yup that’s what it is, I'm convinced.

Looks real to me. Although I thought the biggest wild hogs were the (sp?) bar'd hogs. the ones that were castrated. So all they did was eat and grow. That pig ain't been castrated.
