What kind of holsters are you guys using in the field? I own a Ruger RedHawk 7 1/2 inch in a 44 Mag. Carrying that thing around all day gets a bit heavy (due to the fact that I carry a rifle too). I have tried about 4 different holsters out on the market and really havent found one I like yet. I have used hip holsters to shoulder rigs (nylon & leather). I just had a custom cowboy style holster built for me, havent had a chance to use it yet, but it feels really good on my hip for the time being...What's your guys take on this?

Hi Hoghunter.

Please don't take it wrong, but I'm gonna move this thread over into the Handguns and Handgun hunting forum.

Respectfully,

Now that we're here...

I bought a nylon hip holster (like an Uncle Mikes, but cheaper) that I slide onto the belt of my fanny pack.  It hangs real easy, and I can't tell the difference between my 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk and the Browning Hi-power I used to carry...  the weight is really well distributed.  I think the key to a hip holster for a big gun is a good, wide belt.

My brother carries his in a nice, leather cowboy holster, and he says it's really comfortable also.  It definitely looks cool, but I don't know if the pigs care much about that.  ;)

I'd thought about a cross carry shoulder holster, but between suspenders, binoculars, and backpack straps, that's an awful lot of stuff across the shoulders and chest.

It's a good question, though... what are some of you other big-gun carriers using?

  HOGHUNTER714,

I have the same gun as you. Most of my big game hunting is done with the pistol, but I do carry it in addition to a rifle at times as a backup. As a backup it is just a little to big. I have a Triple K shoulder rig, that is about as comfortable as I've found. You can't see the holster to well, but it's the one I'm wearing in the pic on the head of this fourm. After some time I figured out that if I losen the holster so it will hang lower, it is alot more comfortable. But since it is still alittle to bothersome to carry along with a rifle, I went and bought a ruger vaqureo with a 4 5/8" barrel. Good luck and hope this helps.

I got rid of my 7 1/2" guns and replaced them with 5.5"-6" barreled guns because I just couldn't sit in my truck with the longer gun on my belt. Now I have an M1942 holster from El Paso Saddlery that I very much like. If you have ever seen a military "tanker" holster this is the same thing. Kind of like a shoulder holster but it rides on your chest instead of under your arm. They do not show this model on their website but if anyone wants to see this holster they can get in touch with me and I will E-Mail the page to you from their catalog. Sean
