I think the Spaniards were the ones that left the little piggies around while they were trying to conquer the world back in the 18th. century, they traded the pigs for some Hawaiian Tropic Suntan lotion and Hawaiian BBQ...........tra
The first polynesian explorers (Hawaiians) that settled the islands brought with them pigs, junglefowl (chickens) dogs and bananas, mangoes, etc, etc.
Later, Capt. Cook and other Brits introduced pigs and goats and most everything was imported.
It's believed by some that perhaps the Spaniards were the first European discoverers because of of some early Hawaiian stories and crude spanish maps that were captured and pre-dating Capt. Cook. Also the Hawaiians probably mimicked the Spaniards uniforms, the Conquistador style helmets and capes and the colors of the spanish flag, yellow and red.
glasseye hit the nail on the head. The polynesians brought over the pigs, a smaller strain that at full growth only reached about 100lbs. Later explorers brought the european varieties which went wild and interbred with the polynesian hogs.
Where did the polo.people come from. There needs to be a book, and I need to read it.This is a bigger thing than one might think. When was the first banana grown? Upper
First Polynesians arrived in Hawaii around 300 AD from Marquesas Islands with later migrations from Tahiti. Pigs have been here ALONG time. No mangoes, but sweet potatoes, breadfruit, and taro brought as food crop, and also kamani, milo, coconut trees. Polynesian pigs were pure black, straight tailed, and as mentioned smaller than later European breeds first introduced by Capt. Vancouver. The higher elevation you go the smaller and higher percentage of black pigs, less cross breeding with Euro-Ferals. Lucille my pet mountain piggy is pure black though over 200 pounds due to rich avocado and banana diet.
