Hey guys, i where do we measure our groups? From the centers, the outside edges, or the inside edges?

Thanks

Outside edge to outside edge vertically subtract bullet diameter; then the same horizontally - add the two and divide by two.

Lone Wolf, I've never heard it that way, do you get that from an 'official' source? (I don't shoot benchrest as such.)

Using your method my maximum spread horizontal group of 1", 5 shots in a line is a 1/2" group!! (I think I like your method.)

I've always taken maximum center to center as the group size. Also I don't put much stake in 3 shot groups. 4 or 5 shot groups depending on gun, time, and $.

Good shootin' to ya.

The Army uses the 3 shot group theory, but they measure the distance between the centers of the bullet holes farthest apart.

I on the other hand don't call anything under 5 shots a group. I feel you should be able to get 5 shots in a 1" shot group consistantly at 100 yds. 2" at 200 and so on.

Center to center.

This is fine to measure your 3 or 5 shot groups but if it's on a hunting rifle you best figure out where a cold clean barrel puts it's first round every time, me personaly I NEVER TAKE A CLEAN BARREL INTO THE FIELD, I have number of guns that are up to 5" high with a cold clean barrel and that is not to add in air temp and alt. so if i'm using one of them it's had min of 10 rounds through it before hunting.

IT'S WHERE THE FIRST SHOT GOES THAT COUNTS, NOT 2 THRU 5 UNLESS YOU PLAN ON SHOOTING THAT MUCH AT A BG ANIMAL.

I always take the time to shoot in the gen. area where i'm hunting a few days before.

90% of all BG animals missed are shot over the top of.

It's 20 degrees out you are hunting at 7000 ft with a cold clean barrel you have a 300 yard shot across a cyn with up drafts at your first elk, you have no clue where your gun is going to print you fire your 2 foot high but can't see where you hit do to recoil and vegation 2nd shot same you don't get a 3rd shot, trip over your home you know it's the scope you go to the range 80 degrees out at sea level you fire a couple of shots not paying any att. to where they went then start your nice 3-5 shot group which is right on and 1/2" you have no clue what happened.

It's fun to see what your gun will do but you better know where that first shot goes.

Lone Wolf's method IS a center to center measurement hence the reason for subtracting the diameter of the bullet at or near the end of the equation. Unless you were using an overlay, what would you reference true center from on a ragged piece of paper? It has to be done from a well defined point and that is the outside edge of the hole. Using vertical and horizontal measurements as described just gives you a good solid average.

As for number of shots in a group? I am assuming hunting rifle here and IMO a 3 shot shot group is satisfactory for the reasons stated, the first shot is the one that counts....maybe the second too if you have to but beyond that you're likely pizzing in the wind.

Hey guys, wonderful and informative replys. I am only shooting three shot groups with this hunting rifle. I am just trying to see how well the factory gun will perform and i am having fun trying to make it as accurate as possible. I am just excited about my new rifle and need something to do with it. I have always enjoyed preparing for big game hunts by know my rifle as well as i can. After i bought this new gun, i thoughti would take this up to another level by having it shoot MOA (if possible) It only took a few hours to get get it sited in fairly well, so now its summer and i have all this time till the seasons so i thought i would attempt to get some nice groups like gun mags and Remington catalog show with their ammo. I am having a ball. After i get these groups as tight as i can, I am going to start shooting it cold (as huntducks properly mentioned), and at different positions.
