well, just shed hunting this year, and i was wondering how many you guys have found this year. and if you can guess, it would be cool to know how many you have found in your whole shed hunting career, and how long is that career?
well, kind of embarasing, but i guess i will start and it can only get better with your replies
i have found 9 this year, and about 5 while deer hunting before i started shed hunting

waiting for your replies to give me something to wish for

I've got 10 fresh whitetail's this year so far. We still have tons of snow here in Saskatchewan, so the bes is yet to come.

The last 2 years have been my most productive. I found about 130 last year and 125 the year before. I've been shed hunting since I was 11 growing up in Manitoba. I moved to Alberta when I was 20 and shed hunted there for 6 seasons before moving to Saskatchewan. This will be my 3rd shed season in Saskatchewan and my 19th season total.

I'm not really sure of the total for those 19 seasons, because I really didn't get "hardcore" until moving to Alberta. That's when I put in tons of time and actually kept track of the sheds I found.

Great topic!!

I have been shed hunting for the past three years, basically since I moved to Wyoming. We to have lots of snow on the ground still so I have only been out a couple of times this year. So far I am up to 36 this year, 149 in 2005, and 103 in 2004. I find mostly mulies but also manage to snag a hand full of elk every year too.

well, that didnt quite sound right, i meant that i have found 9 sheds this year while i was out looking for them and in the past years i have only found five while hunting.

mulies4ever, it sounds like you and me are in the same boat, i would be happy to get 20 this year, but you will prolly pass me. i have way more mullies than whitetails in my area and i think mullies are harder to shed hunt.

predator, i have been reading past posts, and yours catch my eye all the time. you are a true professional. you are so lucky to live in the area that you do. From what i have seen on the outdoor channel, you are in a world class area. i respect you, but more or less envy you lol. LUCKY.

B&Cmulies, maybe it is just harder to find mulie sheds for me, you give me something to hope for thats for sure. is your area rolling hills that you can glass really good or what? most of mine is thick sage and farmland, NO hills whatsoever. makes glassing hard, almost impossible.

looks like mullies4ever and me have a bit of a race on our hands

After finding 5 more sheds today my total for this year is at 77 sheds.Plus or minus a few sheds my lifetime total with this years sheds should be around 591 sheds.
All are whitetail sheds except 11 elk sheds from upstate Pa. and all the wt sheds came from Md. and Pa.
I started shedhunting for wt sheds years ago,but until 3 years ago never hit it hard. Some of my earlier years my average was in the teens for sheds found in a year.
I've only been looking for upstate elk sheds for 3 years now.

What works best in my area is just on the edges of big ravines or wooded places. The deer will move out of this cover to feed and then it is really pretty easy to find them. Yes, I do spend a lot of time glassing from high points, as it saves the legs. I am the only one who has acces to this 56,000 acre ranch so no I have no competition. I don't waste my time in teh sage, pretty much you have to just stumble upon them or get lucky in thick cover. Weather permitting I like to go out about 2 or 3 times a week.

WOW I WAS FEELING GOOD ABOUT MY FINDS THIS YEAR UNTILL I FOUND THIS SITE. ITS HARD FOR ME TO GET THE TIME I NEED TO GO OUT. THERE IS ALSO ALOT OF COMPETITION. ALL I HAVE IS MULIES AND I KNOW THAT THEIR NUMBERS ARE NOT AS HIGH AS SOME WHITETAIL AREAS. I GET EXCITED JUST HEARING ABOUT YOU GUYS FINDING THEM AND SEEING THE PICTURES. KEEP THEM COMING.

It has been a tough year so far. I have looked high and low here in Reno early on in the year but recently the snow has hindered much of my finding. Was in Montana for the last two weeks and ran into the same problem. I was up there last year at this very same time and found 4 elk shed but this year only one between 5 of us. Oh what the hell, I am calling in sick today to go out for some mulie sheds. Reading the posts here gives me the fever.....

Nothing so far this year, because of the weather around here...................I've been shedd hunting over 30 years............Getting close to the thousands I guess(that I have found).............
I use to sell them and buy my toy's like my 220-Swift,optic's,shell's,even a old pick-up truck...........
I usually combine my hunts when I hunt shedds, with doing fossil and dinasaur bone hunts too.
They are in the same places and I have many prizes from that kind of hunt.......
I'm building a 16x30 building this summer to house my shedded and skulled horn's and antler's.........
I won't sell them anymore...........

glad to hear it fossilman. i dont know how you could sell them. they are all trophies to me no matter what they look like.
i have an empty room in my basement that i put up a ton of shelves in to display all of my sheds, and that is going to be their resting place untill i run out of room. it is going to be a long time before i fill that room up. but that is my lifetime goal

Hi. I'm from the south east part of New Brunswick, Canada. I've been shed hunting for about 20 years. With the seven I've found this year I have found 250 whitetail sheds, and 4 moose sheds. I gave about 5 away to friends for rattling antlers. It is my favorite pasttime. The most I got was 22 sheds in one year. Would some day like to have a set of elk sheds and a set of mule deer sheds.

Thanks horns antlers and big racks!! Shedhunters are only as good as the area they're searching and determination.I happen to have a good area with low hunting pressure or none and alot of deer.Well, the county is trying to change the high deer numbers and are doing a good job too.Alot of my areas are being wiped out of deer.
I jump all around the county where I search. One day I might be searching a farm the next day searching behind a shopping center, city deer.
I usually get out between 2 and 3 days a week sometimes more and put in about 8 hrs. a day on average. In a couple weeks I'll have 7 days off work and will probably be out searching most that time.Alot of my areas I'll search 4 to 5 times in the same season and I'm not a slow walker.Putting in 15 miles a day wouldn't be a problem.I started my season the first week of Jan. and will probably finish the year in mid March.

no hunting pressure? must be nice. i wish my area didnt have any hunting pressure, well exept for me. when hunting season opens up in my area, it is like a damn road rally, trucks go hauling ass down all the county roads shooting up the place. a bit depressing actually. if they are to lazy to get out and walk, they shouldnt be out their. it is so hard to get a rifle tag in my area, i have been waiting for 6 years, i have never shot a buck. i guess that is what got me started in shed hunting, i had to get my antlers somehow. whether i get my tag this year or not, i am sending in for archery next year. more fun anyways.

i plan on going out again after school on wednesday, i should just ditch, not like i havnt done it before for pheasant season!

I've found 32 so far this year and if I can find 5 more will break my record of 36 back in 1992.I'm closing in on 400 sheds total.NY.state is not a good shed state to much hunting pressure and competition for the sheds.

fossilman, you must have been reading my mind, i was just thinking about where they dumped the road kill the other day. it would be a great place to go. easy pickings. might stink a bit though. i am gonna see if i can find out where they dump them arround here. bad thing about it is if any of them where nice bucks, they prolly aint still in the pile.
