I have found my 340 weatherby synthetic stock stainless bolt rifle to be almost ideal(AT LEAST FOR MY STYLE OF HUNTING)durring the first few days of the season when the potential for longer shots seems more comon, but once the hunting is more productive in the heavy timber and blowdowns...
Ive got two back up rifles I tend to use a good deal after the first few days when the ELK smarten up and stay in the thicker timber. a BLR (LEVER)in 358 win and a 35 WHELEN in 35 remington, theres no doubt thr BLR has a slight edge in accuracy, and the slide action (PUMP) in power, but they both drop ELK very effectively with the SPEER 250 grain bullets I load for them, once the ranges tend to be under 275 yards or so!
one thing IVE noticed , more over the years is that the REMINGTON SLIDE ACTION in 35 whelen has been lent out more, to members of the group, when for various reasons thier primairy rifle won,t work, and has killed far more ELK than most of the other rifles in camp!
how many of you gentelmen own and hunt with a SLIDE action, I had one in 30/06 sprg that I started out hunting ELK with, but traded up to a 35 whelen, when they became available and in my opinion its proven to be an exceptional mid range ELK hunting rifle choice!(I can,t believe they are not extremely popular! except it seems with some of the older more experianced guys)
while its got not nearly the power and range the 340 wby has,(nice to have available thats TRUE!) that EXTRA power and range is seldom needed for ELK, (at least where and how I hunt ELK )and the remington slide in 35 whelen is several pounds lighter in weight!
bth mine has a strait 2.5x leopold scope that works just fine in that combo
and YEAH before some one brings it up! youll need to find a USED one as REMINGTON no longer lists that caliber as available@!!!!
