Interesting tutorial. I noticed that he didn't bother to work on the paths after he created the custom shape. If you follow closely, you'll see how the conversion from a shape to a path is a bit rough, and the two are a bit different.

I posted this tutorial a while back for making a nice watermark for your pictures.



I've converted selections to paths to make custom logos. Combining paths can be quite a bit of fun.

I've set this aside for awhile so I can learn Illustrator CS2.
