I have a hummingbird feeder in the back yard and this little guy stacked it out for himself. I was experimenting with some Kenko extension tubes I bought for my D-70 Nikon, I hooked it up to a 200 mm at F-2.8 which allowed me to get up closer and still focus.

Costa's hummingbird, very nice. They color up a little more in the spring.

If you can catch the light just right that whole throat patch will light up purple.

Sometimes a fill flash will do it.

Great shots.

Nice pics. Hummingbirds can be a lot of fun to try to get shots of. Got Ruby Red throated humminbirds here. Tried and failed at getting frontal shots on them here but have gotten a few really good inflight shots.

Leod I'm not sure how far back I was but someplace around 5 Ft, I used all three of the extension tubes that day and each one changes the focal distance. I think most people who are in to serious hummingbird photography use high speed strobe lights to freeze the frame and stop the bird in flight. That hummingbird paid no attention to me at all, I actually reached out and touched it several times, even tried to get it to sit on my finger but he wouldn't do it, he would step on to a twig.

That is cool. Have never had them let me get that close here.
