My plan is to head down to Ft. Hunter-Liggett this weekend to hunt hogs. I know it's going to be sloppy from the recent rains since I've been there once before (only once and yes we got stuck and had to be towed out).
<

Here's my question.... Without giving away any secret honey holes, if you had your choice of areas to hunt what would be your preference? Since I've only been there once my knowledge of the whole area is limited. I'm not asking for directions to your X spot, just what TA's you think I might have a better chance in than others.
<
We're taking rifles and shotgun/slugs for weapons (no archery).

I know that my choice of areas will be limited to what's open for the weekend, but your ideas will most certainly help!

Thanks for any and all help.

I f you get there on Friday to check in, check the log book it will tell you where they have been getting the hogs at lately. If you are useing a slug gun try 29 its always good. I think they have gotten some out of 30 latley that is also slug gun. With rifle 24,25,10/13 and seven is always worth a try, and the back side of 9 is good now and then. But your best bet is to check the log book.

If you don't have a place to stay, call Deedy at Bryson Resort. It's a great place to stay and she can give you some great info on what and where with the pigs.
Good Luck,
Evlu

Thanks Evlu, you're the best.

QuackWacker email me if you feel like it, after they announce what's open on Thursday afternoon we'll have a better idea. We've gotten an 3/4" of rain in the last 24 hrs. and from the weather forecast, it's going to be a wet week, better bring your comfy hunting boots. Game cart too...

25 seems to have pulled the most hogs so far this season. But mainly cause it's been open I think. 10/13, 15, 16, 24 are great area's to go for pigs, if they're open though. 29 and 30 are also good area's, but they are walk in only and restricted to Archery, shotgun, or muzzleloader. Evlu and I got a shot at one in 19 a couple weeks ago, so they're moving around. However 19 was limited on the area the pigs were hitting. So it's a shorter hunt. Good luck, and hope you get one.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'll be looking over the areas mentioned on the maps later tonight and will check with FHL for what's open late Thurs and again on check-in Friday afternoon.

I appreciate the help and will look into Bryson Resort although we are "self-contained" for this hunt as far as accomodations go. May need them in the future though, as I hope to get back to FHL again this year

Hi QuackWacker, I was at the game shack today and Nancy said that she's only going to be checking in hunters from 2:00-3:30 on Friday from now on. Range Control wants the extra time to re-arrange their training areas at the last minute if they need it.

What? From now on? Is she planning on opening up earlier on Sat/Sun mornings to compensate? I thought she worked there to check hunters in to an area.

Thanks Deedy!

I'll be giving her a call and I'll plan to be at the check-in during those times.

I think that they are doing everything they can right now as they are short handed. I think it'd be best if we had patience in this situation. We are so blessed to be able to hunt the fort.

Wolfden,
All the info including website address of FHL, maps and all the relevant info is in the top green band of every page here at JHO. At that top green band you will find the menu "hunting info & columns". Click on that and then click on "California Hunting" then click on "Fort Hunter Liggett" and if you want to go directly to the Fort Hunter Liggett website then click on the address http://www.liggett.army.mil You will find all the info you need. Hunting permits are availabel only by mail. You must have a valid Hunting license and the appropriate pig tags, deer tags(when in open season). Only money order or cashiers check is accepted. Make sure your vehicle registration and car insurance tags/cards are valid and IN YOUR CAR with you or the Security at the gate will NOT let you in. The base is divided into 30??? training(hunting) areas and each training(hunting) area is allowed 25-35???? hunters. The base itself seldom get sold out except during opening day of dear season. Other than that most areas are NOT sold out. Check in at the Wildlife Station is required to get an assigned Training(hunting) Area permit. Read the rules and follow the rules because this is a Federal Reservation run by the Military and the Federal Police. Other than that enjoy yourself to a very scenic and wildlife abundant and very safe place right here in our backyard. God Bless and 'Nuff said.
