Hunter rescued from Sierra Madre after accident

10/20/03

ENCAMPMENT, Wyo. (AP) - A hunter who accidentally cut himself while field dressing an elk was rescued after spending a night in the wilderness because searchers could not immediately find him.

Steven Barnaby, 46, of Bellevue, Neb., was transported by a helicopter from F.E. Warren Air Force Base to Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie on Friday morning.

He was no longer at the hospital Monday, a nursing supervisor said.

Barnaby had injured himself Thursday afternoon in the Huston Park Wilderness Area of the Medicine Bow National Forest and suffered extensive bleeding, Carbon County Sheriff Jerry Colson said.

His hunting partner, Arthur Estes, 46, also of Bellevue, hiked to the Green Mountain trailhead, where he was able to call 911 on his cell phone about 5:45 p.m. Thursday. He relayed coordinates of Barnaby's location, but apparently his global positioning system device wasn't working properly, and searchers were unable to find the pair that night.

The search resumed Friday morning and the hunters were found after a deputy in a search plane noticed smoke from a campfire and ''SOS'' written in a clearing with orange survey tape.

Colson said the two were able to stanch Barnaby's bleeding by using direct pressure near the wound.

I'd bet that injury was the cause of a dull knife. I stuck myself pretty good while skinning a bear. The knife was getting dull, and I was struggling to make a cut, when I popped the blade a good inch into my foreman. (Fifteen miles into the wilderness.) I'm looking at the scar right now. Lesson learned. Now I carry two knives and a stone.

I thought all non-residents had to hire a guide when hunting WY wilderness areas?
