What a great weekend! I have been patiently viewing the posts in the Shed forum waiting for Feb 15 to pass so that I could begin my search for freshies. Well, Saturday my dad and I began the search in a big woods where we know deer have been bedding and where we found sheds last year. Upon entering the woods, about 25 deer begin to exit stage left. I quickly go to the binoculars to scan heads for antlers. None! Yes, we should find some today. Well, after three hours of walking nothing. Feeling pretty discouraged and ready to give up for the day we headed back to the truck. I had hopes of finding the sheds to a big (135 to 140" ) 11pt that I had been after during bow season. I had seen him quite a few times during archery but noone saw him until he turned up in late January in one of our corn fields. Instead of giving up, dad suggested that we head to the ditch food plot. We have found many sheds along this ditch so I said why not. Well, it turned out great because I saw it laying there shining in the sun. It was the big 11pt 6 pt side. It did have one broken point but I could not have been happier! Biggest I have found to date. I scored it at 62" (adding back the broken tine). Yesterday we again we out by the ditch area trying to find the other side and found an old shed buried in the grass. As soon as I pulled it out I realized that it was a match to one dad had found two years earlier. We were both excited but kind of embarrassed that we missed this one not one year but two years in a row. My dad also found another small 4 pt side for a total of three this year.

I cannot wait to get back out and try to find the other side of the big 11pt.

As it lay:

Nice! Waiting till the time was right paid off. Every year I tell myself that i'm not going out until mid to late Febuary....but I just can't help myself. Congrats on the productive weekend.

Well, made it out again on Sunday and found a fresh 3pt side. No luck at finding the other side to the big 11pt. I wish the snow would leave so making the finding a little easier.

Pics coming tomorrow as I forgot my camera.

Well have not posted in a while due to illness and a bunch of the white stuff. First pic is of a dead buck we found on March 8. Shame because it would have been a real nice deer next year and a stud if he made it the year after that. Only 2.5 year old judging from its teeth.

Went out this Saturday with my Dad and son, Jared. He walked a long, long way that day trying to find his first shed of the year. Well, I told him to go with Papa and I would go through the thicket and meet him on the other side. Over a log I went and just on the other side I see my fourth shed of the year. Nice 5 pt side. I called to Jared and he made his way through the thicket in no time and after a few seconds his face lit up. I SEE IT!, he yelled. Probably spooked all the deer in the county but he had found his first of the year. Priceless!

Thats what I love. Watching my son's eyes light up when "he" finds one. Good job to dad.

That's a great pic of your boy with his first shed. His smile tells the story there. Congrats to you both

My oldest two and I headed out to a friend's property in effort to find my daughter Jaelyn her first shed. After about an hour of walking we came to a hill in the middle of a bunch of pines. I said "if we do not find a shed in this area, something is wrong". We had just crested the hill when I saw it. I had to physically restrain my 6 year old son as he saw it soon after I had. Jaelyn finally saw it and it was the highlight of her day.
