< Missouri deer •THEN: Into the early 1960s, it was rare to even see a deer in some parts of Missouri. After a relocation and stocking program by the Missouri Department of Conservation, the herd grew, but it took time. Just 30 years ago, firearms hunters shot only 53,164 deer — a lot in those days. In fact, that 1979 total was a record at the time.
