Hoping to get some info about hunting at barrett lake. I have never hunted there before and got picked for the lottery hunt. would like to know if to use decoys, which blinds to choose etc. Any help would be great. thanks!
Great place to duck hunt. As it is anywhere, some blinds are better than others. It takes 1-2 trips to figure things out. My best hunts there where from mid November thorough mid December when there are storms blowing through.
Seems to be a fair amount of divers at Barrett. Earlier in the year is the best bet for Mallards. Should be plenty of cover on the shore line for you to cover up. Best blind sites are like any other lake. Think back of coves at the end of the main arms. Good luck out there and post some pics of your hunt when you are done!!!
As far as dekes go, i have seen alot more teal there than pintail. What i would do is put out as many dekes as possible and put the teal into a lil bunch off to one side by themselves. Calls can do more harm than good in my opinion. If you aren't great at a call, practice in your car on drives to work, not when you are out hunting in the field. Just my opinion though. If you are gonna use a call, try and master a simple single note quack before getting into more elaborate things. I think you would be better off using a whistle type call if you are gonna be hunting So Cal most of the time. Good luck out there!
