Three California Outdoor Heritage Alliance (COHA) sponsored measures were recently approved in their first policy committee hearings in California's State Legislature. AB 979 (Berryhill), which would keep cities and counties from interfering with hunting and fishing activities, passed the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee 7-4, despite significant opposition from animal-rights groups. AB 1423 (Berryhill), which would increase penalties for hunter harassment, help secure federal funds for California's "public access to private lands" hunting program (SHARE Program) and limit commercial hunting club fees, also passed the same policy committee by a vote of 12-0.
In addition, COHA sponsored SB 589 (Harman) received unanimous support in the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee. The bill would provide much-needed accountability and transparency over the expenditure of hunting license tag and stamp monies, while helping to more efficiently and effectively deliver game species conservation projects on the ground. All three bills now head to their respective fiscal committees. For more information, go to www.outdoorheritage.org.
