270 is fine as well but not a material difference in kick. Nothing that a big tough hog hunter shoudnt be able to handle though! Bet you don't even feel the kick in the field.

I love my Tikka T-3 lite, i think it's around $550. Toss in a decent scope and you're set.

Go with the 30-06 bolt rifle for any big game. You can get ammo pretty much ANYWHERE!!!!!! I have a 30-06 and have taken 1 deer and 2 pigs. The pigs didnt take another step after the 180gr hit them, and for the deer he went about 20-30yrds with a 180gr also. All 3 shots were complete pass throughs.

On messing up the meat. The first pig was shot at around 50yrds put it through both shoulders had to cut off most of both shoulders due to blood shot. Second pig was 65yrd shot in the neck and didnt have any wasted meat. My deer was 85yrd shot right behind one shoulder and excited middle of the ribs and didnt loose much meat at all with him.

I hit a small pig several months back at roughly 30 yards with my 300 wsm. It went right through him 6 inches or so behind the shoulder. No meat was wasted. He ran a bit then toppled over. I would rather go bigger than smaller when it comes to tough critters like pigs.

All excellent advice. Be prepared for what you MIGHT run in to. When I deer hunt I shoot a gun capable of killing the largest hog I might be likely to run in to. I'm a magnum fan, but really a 30-06 is almost identical to a 7mm r.m. in performance. The nice thing about the -06 is the ready availability of so many different types of ammunition, and perhaps the best overall price too. Like Dan said; you won't feel the recoil when you're aiming at hair.

And I guess you don't shoot the 30-06 a bunch of times like at the range.

Once you have your rifle dialed in and scope all locktighted in place. I just shoot it a few times 3-5 rounds before each hunt at the range just to make sure she is still on point!!!!

I shoot five days a week, weather permitting. I just got off the range shooting my Sharps with a 506 gr. Creedmore bullet rolling along at 1,600 fps, give or take. I can't hunt HERE with it, but that's some heap big medicine for Wyoming. Talk about a kick!

If your willing to cough up the money for a gun then definently go that route.

I also would recomend the tikka t-3. I have one in .223 and its lights out accurate and at 6lbs easy to carry all day.

Top that off with a 1-4x20 or 2-7 scope and you are set. Infact I plan to set up a .270 tikka with the same scope as my .223. With two identical guns the cheap .223 and jackrabbit practice will be most effective. Takes alot of practice to be a good shot! So you might consider getting a gun identical to your .223 AR chambered in .308 6.8.

.270,30-06, and 308 are all about equal. The 30's have a little more punch for the biggest game but a little more drop then .270. Since you have to hunt lead free most likely its all expensive as heck within 1 or 2 dollars in price. So you probably have to find it online to get the lead free that you will want. No tsx at walmart so it makes ammo availibility less important. If you plan to shoot alot of lead then 30-06 might be a better choice for ammo selection.
