Hunting camp is scene of slaying

Associated Press

9/28/02

CODY, Wyo. (AP) - The Park County sheriff's office is investigating a fatal shooting at a backcountry hunting camp 10 miles southeast of Yellowstone National Park.

An adult male who was an employee of a hunting guide apparently was shot to death in the camp's cook tent Wednesday night, said Tom Thompson, sheriff's investigator and county coroner.

"This was not a hunting accident," he said Friday.

The identities of the victim and the guide were not released.

He said the victim apparently died of one gunshot wound. The body was taken out by helicopter Friday and transported to Billings, Mont., for an autopsy, which will be performed Sunday, Thompson said.

He said he could not say who found the body, and guessed about a dozen people were in the camp at the time of the shooting.

Undersheriff Dave Doyle and a forensics team from the State Crime Laboratory flew by helicopter to the remote site in the Bridger-Teton Wilderness Thursday to take statements and gather evidence.

The on-scene investigation wrapped up Friday.

Thompson said it is too early to say whether any charges will be filed.

"We won't know that until all the evidence is in and the autopsy is done and we'll put it all together," he said. "If there is a reason for charges to be filed then they will be filed."

"It's just too sketchy," he added. "There's not a whole lot that we can tell you at this point because there's not a whole lot that we know."

The camp is in the Thorofare area, one of the most remote places in the continental United States. No roads are nearby and it takes about seven hours to reach by horseback, Thompson said.

I'll be waiting to hear more about this one! I would bet it was more a case of someone having too much to drink in the cook tent.

While i was elk hunting last week,a friend of my guides drove in from Cody Wy.And told us about the shooting. He did'nt know much else about it yet either.
At least i shot a 6x6 instead of the cook or the guide.

There was an article in the Casper Wyo. paper several days ago. Should have posted the article when I read it but didn't?

The article stated the incident had been ruled an accidental shooting. The fellow shot himself with a pistol while in the cook tent. Given the fact that alcohol was involved and no note was left it was not ruled a suicide. A witness walked into the tent just as the shooting occurred? Sad....

Man accidentally shoots self

Spokane Spokesman-Review

Cody, Wyo. _ Authorities have released more details of the shooting death of a cook at a remote hunting camp.

Joseph Wiseman, 26, of Wapiti, died from an accidental self-inflicted shot to the front of the head by a .357-caliber handgun, according to the investigation.

A report by the Park County Sheriff's Office said alcohol played a major role and that Wiseman was not handling the gun in a "safe or careful manner."

Undersheriff Dave Doyle said Wiseman and two other men had been drinking and playing with the gun, but that Wiseman was alone inside the cook tent went the gun went off.

Doyle said the shooting was not considered suicide because alcohol was involved and Wiseman had not talked about killing himself nor had he left a note.

Wiseman died early the morning of Sept. 26 at the Rimrock Ranch's camp in the Thorofare, about 10 miles from the southeast corner of Yellowstone National Park.

End article
