I'm a transplant from New Mexico to the bay area and wanted to try hunting here in California. I am a resident of California now but haven't been hunting in a few years. I used to hunt deer, elk, and antelope in NM.

I checked the dfg site to learn about getting a hunting license to do some hog hunting but it appears that a hunter safety course is required or you can "test" out of the course.

Does anyone have any information about the test? I'd rather test out than take the course.

Thanks in advance!

bayareahunter,

Welcome to JHP and to California!

If you held a license in a state that required hunter safety, then that license will serve in lieu of taking the course. Even if the license is a couple of years old, it doesn't matter.

For more info on the Hunter Safety classes and test, contact one of the resources available from the DFG website. You can find a local instructor and discuss the possibility of testing out.

What Speckmisser said. I have been told that the stores have a list of what states are good to go.
