The problem is that no one is going to tell you. The sad part about all this is the best spots are on private land and if someone knows of a good spot on public, they're not going to tell anyone. Too bad. I am in the same boat.
You should try Fort Hunter Liggett since it is good hunting land that is open to the public. It's located just north of Los Padres NF.
