I just moved here to San Luis Obispo from Kauai. I've been here for almost a whole school year. I've been hunting once since I've been here, up in Los Padres forest, we drove up a bunch of hills to a radio tower and walked into the bottom of the valleys and hiked around. Found some good tracks, but no hogs or hog sign.

Okay, what I'm wondering about: I've been considering transferring back to University of Hawaii at Manoa on Oahu. Mainly for the warm water, good surf, hunting, fishing and spearfishing. I know how to fish and hunt for most the game species there and both are really good.

I'm kinda of making a pro and cons list. And I'm still unsure about the hunting over here.

First we'll start with question (1).
Where are the hunting units within an hour of san luis obispo.

(2) deer hunting, what is the season, what kind of tags do i need?

(3) hog hunting? " " " "

(4)Small Game (rabbit, squirrel etc...) Where can I hunt small game with a .22, where can I hunt small game with a pellet gun?

(5)Which public areas hold hog populations?

Thanks for any answers I can get.

I would suggest that you post your questions in the Hog hunting, small game, Blacktail deer and Muley deer forums. You will be more likely to get good replies there. Also check out the DFG website DFG website. They supposedly have the big game book up now for the coming year. I'll try to give some answers here.

2. You are in the A zone and I believe archery season is in July and rifle in parts of August and aprt of September. Check the DFG site to make sure. You will need your hunting license and a deer tag. You buy the deer tag application at the same place where you buy the hunting license. A zone doesn't fill up there is no panic with deadline.

3. Hog hunting season is year round. You need pig tags the you buy where you buy the hunting license. Starting next year (July 1) they will cost you around $15-$20 each. This year they cost $10-$15 for a book of 5. Pig tags are good for all of California.

4. Any public land that allows hunting. Check for local restrictions though.

5. After what I hear, very few, if any.

Good luck with finding your hunting space. The other forums I mentioned gets more traffic and you are likely to get much more answers.
