. Bull tags in Calif. are a lifetime dream. Me and my son drew 2 Tenemaha cow tags about 4 years ago.
Should be a great hunt. Don't worry about scouting. You'll have to go to a orientation the night before the hunt. They will cover regulations, have a local taxidermist there, as well as a local butcher to talk about meat and trophy care. They want every tag filled, as these are control hunts. The local biologist will show everyone on the map exactly where the groups of elk are on a daily basis. (This hunt is ussually 75-100% success rate). It was 100% for the two of us. There's some real big bulls out there in the alphafa fields. There racks are huge, but they sometimes are missing some tines because of the poor mineral content of their diets.
There's a couple motels about 4-5 blocks from where you will be hunting, and the locals are very pro-hunter.

If I recall right this hunt is now a bowhunt? If it is you will have to figure how to ambush a elk as they're moving from field to field, or down to the river (Owens)to water.

Awesome,
This being the first year for hunting on the west side of 395, it should be fun. For my 2 cents worth, I would spend some time scouting. You will see the big herds in the open fields on the west side, but that makes for a lot of eyes out there. Spend some time on the east side down Stewart Rd. & drive some of the dirt roads. Though the cows have not been on the east side in the past year hunts, many great bachelors are hanging out by the Owens River. Mark Johns owns the ranch on the east side & he is always willing to help out a hunter or two. Expect temps ranging from the low 30's in the morning to the 60's during the day. Enjoy

Brut, Congrats on your tag, you were one of my competitors for those tags. I drew that 3rd period rifle hunt two season ago. It was my wifes uncle and I and we drew both of the two tags. What Luck. The hunt was a little difficult then and fish and game had actually offered a refund prior to the hunt. However with both sides of 395 open to hunting now you should be fine. When we were there we counted 32bulls in the alfafla field on the west side of the road(no hunting then). On day two we did find three bulls on the huntable side of the road. A 6x5, 4x4, spike. We actually ran into Mark Johns when we were looking for a way to access the property were the bulls were. Mark is fine human being and was more than helpful with us to take two of the bulls and get them out of his field. We popped the 6x5 and the 4x4 simoutaneusly. Dont let these animals fool you just because there on the sides of the hwy. They still do not like human intruders. We belly crawled through the sage and sticker bushes to get up on these critters. With a bow you need to scout for the exit points from the fields and set up on them. If you need more info send me and email with your phone # and I'll give you a call.

Thanks, SierraExplorer. Here is a pic of the bull I took on that hunt. That photo quality S@@ks but you can get the idea. The afore mentioned tine breakage is a true statement both of the bulls we took had broken tines. However when we were there it was no time to be picky. We scouted in Oct. and did not see a animal in the hunt area. When we returned in Dec. and did not see an animal the whole day before season and the first day of season we were concerned. So we popped the first to animals we could.
