Well, I thought I'd be posting in the turkey section but I just couldn't put it together. Last weekend I headed up north to a private ranch with my bro in law, Dave. Just the two of us in a triple slide out motor home and 180 acres of prime hunting habitat. I might just add that this property is owned by Dave's friend and we are the only ones that hunt it. You would think that we would hunt there every weekend but I haven't hunted there for the past three years. Needless to say I was pumped!
I met Dave there and before I had a chance to get out of my truck and streach, I saw a dozen hogs on a hillside. Sweet!! There was no doubt where I was heading. Within an hour I was on the hill where I last saw the large group of hogs but I couldn’t locate them. Dave was on the opposite hillside. I glassed down in the canyon and saw a different group of hogs feeding in an open grass meadow. It was time to switch directions and head for that group. I’ve learned that hogs move a lot and figured I would be wasting valuable daylight looking for the first group of hogs, which were probably long gone. Off I went.
It didn’t take long before I was in the meadow with hogs. I used the contour of the hill to sneak in as close as I could. When I creped up to the rise I could see their backs, but they were too far away. There was about eight of them, all large sows and they were moving away from me. I was out of cover and options. Then, two of the hogs started fighting, the group did an “about face” and started coming towards me. Right on, I’m back in action! When they came into my comfort zone I waited for one to stop and let her have it. I hit her perfect and she piled up just out of sight. About two hours into the hunt and I had a CBH record book hog down!
I spent the rest of the weekend trying to get a tom turkey. I passed on a jake turkey the first morning and couldn’t connect on a long beard. I think it was too late in the season, although I'm sure the turkey numbers are down. Dave ended up with a hog (rifle) that was a twin to mine and a jake turkey (shotgun).
Pics are coming. She officially weighed (scale) 180 pounds. I posted this in the bowhunting section too. Ed F
