I was a bad boy today. I finally broke down and bought myself a new digital camera to replace the old relic I had. I had a Panasonic Palm Cam that was the size of a large pair of binoculars. You actually insert a 3.5" disc in it. That worked OK until it broke and I can't get the disk out any more. This should be the last picture I ever take with it. I think I will give it to my oldest son.

I bought an Olympus Camedia C-50 zoom, 5.0 Mega pixel after doing some research on here and other places. I think it will work out well and I really like the size compared to my old one.

I just have to figure out how to tell my wife. (Or not).

"But I got it on sale dear" or "That old thing. I've had that for a long time"

Can someone in here explain to me about the zoom though. It's a 3X optical zoom and something about a 10X digital zoom. What is that and how does it work.?

There should be a feature on the camera where you can combine the optical(lens) zoom with the digital(computer) zoom. Combining the two together will get you 30x total zoom.

Are you sure it is 10x digital zoom??

What digital zoom does is "upsample" the original image that is captured by the optics. The image will degrade some though.

I use it. It is not too bad. Some cameras have a better up-sampling algorithm than others I think. You will just have to play around with it and judge for yourself.

After playing with it for a while I finally figurerd it out. It's actually 12x with the digital zoom so I guess the digital zoom is 4x. When you switch to digital zoom the picture gets narrower. Still I think I am going to like it.

Lanlord, I don't have a clue of what you talking about on the algorithm but I'll take your word for it. I will just play with it for a while till I get it all figured out.

Thanks for your help.
