ICE FISHING TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO BROOKLYN, MICHIGAN
For the past six seasons Ice Team has hosted ice fishing tournaments – dubbed “Trap Attacks” – in Brooklyn, Michigan. And nowhere else along the frozen tournament trail have events been more popular or more welcomed by the community. That’s why Ice Team keeps coming back…
On Sunday, January 11, 2004, it’s happening again, though in a slightly different and upgraded fashion. A maximum of 100 two-person teams will vie for a cash purse at the Clam Corp. Trap Attack Open on Wamplers Lake. Clam Corp – manufacturer of Fish Trap and Clam portable ice fishing shelters – will headline the event and represent Ice Team.
Previously, teams competed for valuable product prizes and the celebrated plaques, known as the “wood”. Now, the top ten teams will share a $5,000 cash payout, with the first place finishers earning $2,000.
Furthermore, the top ten teams earn passage to fish in the 2005 NAIFC, where an unprecedented $50,000 in cash will be divided between 10 teams. This is uncharted waters for competitive ice fishing; never before has an actual ice fishing tournament rewarded its victors so handsomely.
Sunfish – bluegills, redears, and pumpkinseeds – are the targeted species at the Clam Corp Trap Attack Open, but certainly not the only game in Wamplers Lake. Crappies are abundant and regularly caught by competitors. Wamplers’ muskies are legendary in stature, and sporadically wrestle with ice anglers. In the summer, Wamplers is a favorite destination for bass enthusiasts. And due to recent stocking efforts, Wamplers is developing into quite a walleye fishery.
The actual tournament takes place on Sunday, January 11th from 8 am to 1 pm. The festivities, however, get rolling on Friday evening. Ice Team is sponsoring a free seminar on Friday night, where expert ice anglers share their knowledge with the public.
On Saturday morning from 9 am until noon, in front of Jerry’s Pub, Ice Team will conduct a free Kids’ Ice Fishing Clinic. Youngsters will have the opportunity to sit in a Fish Trap; look under the ice with an Aqua-Vu camera; jig a Lindy lure; check depth and watch a lure on a Vexilar flasher; help drill a hole with a StrikeMaster auger; and see the newest snowmobiles and ATV’s from Arctic Cat. Adult supervision is required.
Knutson’s Sporting Goods is the official tournament headquarters of the Clam Corp Trap Attack Open. Lodging is available at the Super 8 Motel, amongst other area facilities. The Super 8 Motel will be hosting Friday night’s free public seminar and Saturday evening’s rules meeting, making the establishment an ideal choice for lodging.
