Illinois agency drops proposal to limit resident hunters to 4 deer each year

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is withdrawing a proposed rule that would have placed a four-deer limit on Illinois hunters each year.

Department officials said about 125 people attended a public meeting on the proposed rule last month and several hundred more sent letters opposing the measure. A chief complaint from opponents was that the limit would inhibit landowners' ability to manage the size and composition of deer herds.

"Teamwork between hunters and private landowners is critical to the proper management of Illinois' deer herd," said department Director Brent Manning. "The agency has always been willing to listen to our constituencies and will do so again in this case."

A limit of two antlered bucks, instituted in 1998, will remain in effect for resident hunters.

All new rules adopted last year governing out-of-state hunters will be enforced this year.
