POOR DEER LOSES BRAVE FIGHT

By LARRY CELONA, New York Post

November 2, 2001 --
Cops guided a migrating deer from the Hudson River yesterday morning, but the stag was struck by a car after reaching land and died on the way to the hospital, according to Parks Commissioner Henry Stern.

The four-pointer was spotted swimming furiously south, just below the George Washington Bridge.

A police Harbor Unit launch herded the animal to shore, where it was hit by a car while Emergency Service cops tried to corral it near 158th Street in Riverside Park.

The animal was tranquilized and placed on a gurney by cops before Parks Department personnel took it to the Center for Animal Care and Control, Stern said.

While the cause of death had not been determined, the veterinarian who examined the deer said the animal had been under a great deal of physical stress, according to Doris Meyer, a spokeswoman for the center.

Stern said the buck had apparently swum from Westchester County.

"While the cause of death has not been determined"
That's a good one.
Can you say blunt trauma?
