CASPER -- Conscientious waterfowl hunters report the banded birds they harvest and in this information age now have three options for reporting recovered waterfowl bands, says Larry Roberts, Game and Fish Department waterfowl biologist.

He says hunters can still mail the band, if they like, to Bird Banding Laboratory, 12100 Beech Forest Road, Laurel, MD 20708-4037, but reporting now is as easy as a telephone or computer. Call (800) 327-BAND (2263), or go to http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbl on the Internet, click on “How to Report a Bird Band” and fill out the form.

Roberts adds phone and Internet reports can be made 24 hours a day and the call is toll-free, even from pay phones. All federal bird bands can be reported, regardless of whether the band has the phone number inscribed.

“The telephone and Internet systems allow hunters to report band recoveries without sending in the band,” Roberts said. “The systems are designed to get information to the Bird Banding Lab quickly, increase the number of recovered bands reported, and supply certificates to hunters faster.”

Within a few weeks of reporting the band, hunters receive a certificate indicating the age, sex, and species of the bird along with information on where the bird was originally banded.

Likewise, Roberts says, if a bird is harvested with a plastic neck or leg collar, or an implanted radio or satellite transmitter, the recovery can be reported to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service using any of the reporting systems.

“Hunters who just fillet the breast and legs without skinning or plucking the bird should examine and feel the bird for a transmitter,” Roberts said.

Band returns provide waterfowl biologists important information about harvest rate and what proportion of the birds banded during summer are harvested that fall.
