This last weekend I attended a workshop on game management hosted by the New South Wales Game Council. The GC are the guys that manage hunting in NSW.
It was a great get together.
I wouldn't imagine it would interest many guys who just go out occasionally to hunt, but for guys who have access to deer herds where they might be able to manage them for better hunting (either meat or trophy) it was a great introduction to the nuts and bolts of game management.
There were sessions on deer aging, we had a look at some deer out in a paddock as part of a demonstration on how to assess eating quality on the hoof (and at the same time learned the real science behind hanging and aging), and a deer was pulled apart on the table so that people could see what to look for (condition and disease wise) so that we could confirm our field assessments. Dr Tony English (Professor in Veterinary Sciences) did manage to nick a finger (right after telling us to be careful) demonstrating to us that even Professors in cutting shoot up can be human sometimes too
There was some great tucker put on by the Nepean Hunting club and the whole shebang was run tight and with plenty of thought to keep us all interested and awake (rather than a bunch of talking putting us to sleep in our chairs.
