Picture of an Indian Gaur Bull herd me & my cousin spotted while trekking this past summer.
It was taken with a crappy 2mp 2x zoom 6yr-old nikon 950, which I had to use to 'prove my worth' before I could use my dad's slr. Will be getting much better pictures this coming summer with a f80 or d70 + 300mm.

kickdog23,

Great picture!

I always get my Asian/Indian wild/domestic "oxen" confused...

Which were the ones which could get a horn span of several feet?

I recall reading that one sort of wild (maybe feral?) oxen were particularly savage and the bulls would emerge from the forst and try to steal the domestic cow oxen...this would lead to a fight with the domestic bulls which would usually be to the death and it was nearly always the domestic one which lost as it's jungle living cousin was so much bigger...

regards,

Pete

Kickdog23,

Thinking about it, I am pretty sure its the India Water Buffalo not the Gaur...but I think you also have another wild "oxen" too ???

Pete,

You are correct, the feral have much larger horns than the gaur. They're much smaller oxen but are far more aggressive than the gaur, and would charge at humans even more than bears would. In the south we call these water buffalo, but I'm not sure if its technically correct (we call Gaur 'bison' though technically incorrect). We only have these 2 types of oxen in the south. I've heard that they have a couple more types in the north, but I'm not sure what they are.

Here's a picture of a herd of feral we spotted during another trip, again the picture's pretty crappy due to the fact that I had an old point-and-shoot camera for wildlife, but you can sorta make out the horns:
