Went out hunting for a public lander yesterday. Weapon of choice: Remington 870 express 12 ga. pump action w/ Lead slugs.

Started in the afternoon with a 1 1/2 hr drive to my first stop, Boggs Mountain. When I got there I noted the high elevation and a bunch of mountain bikers. I decided to drive down to the shooting range and just get a look at the surroundings. Well, after driving on the dirt road for a couple of miles I wasn't feeling it so I got out of there and headed towards Cache Creek.

On my way over, around 4 pm, a light rain kicked in and I became a little more hopeful about filling a tag. Grabbed a couple of cheeseburgers, they hit the spot and I was feeling good so I made my way to an area I haven't been before, but have wanted to check out.

With new hope and a full stomach I drove past cache creek and towards Walker Ridge Rd. I took the road all the way to the Lake Dam, probably stopped about 10-15 times to glass. From the road I glassed an isolated water source, shaded pockets, and valleys. It was a fun to taking that road nice and easy through the hills, the quail were everywhere up there and I'm still kickin myself for not having a fishing pole with me (IVR looks fishy). Same thing on the way out.

After driving Walker Ridge I spent the last two hours hunting @ cache creek. I have been there twice before and I wanted to burn some boot rubber while in the area. I came up on a sleeping coyote, kind of looked like a pig and had me going for a second. Found some OLD scat that was possibly from a small pig, but probably not.

All in all I went home with the unfilled tags I set out with, but I got to scratch that itch just enough for some satisfaction. Thought I'd see a bunch of poison oak and some rattlesnakes out there, but didn't see any.

Will try Cow mountain, knoxville, or Mendo National next.

Ive spent A LOT of time in Boggs and only heard of a few guys nailing hogs there. Indian Valley can produce when its wet enough. My brother in law has a nice spread near there that we do pretty well on. My family and i used to spend several weeks there in the summer camping and the trout and catfishing was amazing. Not sure about now. Hows the water level? Best of luck on your next outing.
