I'm shooting a 30-30 Winchester 94 Trapper with the the big loop lever and Ghost Ring Sights.
The sights are set for me to hold 2" low at 6:00 at 25 yards to hit dead center and my spread with 3 shots is 1/2" using Winchester 170 gr. CPX-2 Power Points. At 50 yards with a good bench rest I'm hitting about the same and a spread of 1"-1 1/2" when I do my part well. At 100 yards they open to about 2.5"- 3" and then with my eyes I'm lucky to get 4" - 6" spread at 200 yards.
Around my part of the country most Deer and Bear or Boar are taken at 50 yards or less and the 30-30 Trapper is about the most perfect rifle for WV that anyone could ask for. Mike
Win 94 Trapper (short barrel) and original buckhorn sights
I was doing about 2-3" at 50 and not even applicable at 100. Plenty good enough for NC deer hunting at normal ranges. I don't and won't shoot that gun over 100 yards anyway. There are better rifles for that job.
After many years of bouncing around behind the seat of my truck, those sights are now about as accurate as a kid's cork gun. I plan to replace them with ghost rings.
Just in case anyone is interested I thought I would post this... After I have tried my Ghost Ring Sights on my 30-30 Trapper for awhile now I decided to paint the tall front sight florescent red over the white just to see how it would show up in the Ghost Ring and I really like it! It seems easier to center the post and get on target quicker. Mike
Thanks Oneshot, Here are some better pictures if you want to see them. I used a toothpick and just let the paint kind of flow off of it right in the center of the slot on the sight. Stood the rifle up on my bench with the barrel down to keep the sight level and let the paint dry that way.
Hope you ane your family have a great Christmas and New year! Mike Visit My Website
Win 1894, 150gr soft points group roughly 1.75" at 100m, using the factory sights. I didn't get a chance to install my William's peep sight before I deployed again, but I'll post again if that shrinks the groups any (doubtful). 2" is solidly minute-of-dinner on any critter large enough to feed more than one person.
With my 73 yr old eyes with cataracts I installed a 3x9x40 Bausch & Lomb Scope on my 45-70 Marlin XLR now I can see to hunt.Iron sights are about useless until I get my right eye lens changed out.
