my goodness..who writes fish and game websites? granted my reading comprension is poor.

ok. say i want to hunt elk in idaho. (NM is now a very long shot)

i pay the $155ish and buy a license, and pay $14ish in application fee and put in for a "controlled" hunt. i pick an area, and type of weapon..and go for it. if i draw, i pay the remaining $450 and i am good to go. or do i pay the $450 up front?

if i dont draw we can pay the additional $450 and hunt OTC (uncontrolled hunt) right? or do we simply lose the original $180 or so?

Ok
#1 buy a license
#2 fill out application and send in application fee only!
#3 if drawn you can then buy the tag.
If you are not drawn you can go ahead and buy otc tags.
if you are not drawn and choose not to go you are out the license fee and app fee.
I hope this helps. Stay away from the wolf areas.
good luck

+1 what RK said. Btw, Idaho hunting is very tough -especially elk. Idaho has the largest population of wolf packs in the US. Elk tend to be a bit more timid in bugling...most of teh elk we spot in Idaho you need horses or you're in for a couple day pack session. Make sure you get a good pack.
