January Colorado elk hunts?

Have any of you ever hunted elk in Colorado in January? I've talked with an outfitter a friend has used very succesfully several times and he says I can get a cow tag for next January. However being from AZ this just seems impossible. I did call the CO game dept and the person was not able to give me much info but thought it was possible with private landowner tags.

There are a few Jan. private land Cow hunts in the booklet. But I think if you missed the draw, you will have to check for left-over tags or land owner tags. 1 problem will the Jan. hunts is the amount of snow to deal with.
