I couldn't find the link, but the Conservation Department has decided to drop the January extention hunt for next year (2002).

They have found that numerous bucks were taken that have already shed their antlers. This does not help to reduce the herd. (I'm sure that many antlerless big buck were killed).

They further added that many hunters were not taking an extra deer during the November hunt and saved their tag for the January extention only to be shut out by bad weather.

Overall the extention was a sucess in some ways and did not have an impact in others.

The herd in Missouri is estimated at 1 million.
