Putting in for jav this year and was curious to know what the common caliber was and what kind of shots you have been presented with in the past. Growing up in the northwest i never hunted javelina before, so i curious to know what i should expect to find. Thanks for the help!

They are thin skinned and don't have much fat, no "armour" like feral pigs.
You can shoot them with just about anything and up close too. They are not hard to stalk but they are hard to find.
I believe that the smallest legal caliber permited is a 22 magnum.

I love my 22-250 but i have got mixed reactions from people when saying that i am going to be hunting with it. I think that because i love shooting it so much and that i know the gun so well that i am going to have to go with it. I would love to shoot some broadheads but i never have taken the time needed to really get into archery. It's something that when i don't have to work so much that i am really going to have to give a try. Thanks for the comments!

Even though the javelina are smaller than the typical feral pig or European strain boar they can be very tough critters. I've been chassed a few times and it doesn't make too much of a difference when a 220 pound or 120 pound pig are chasing you. The type of caliber/rifle will vary depending on the type of terraign you will be hunting on as well. I think it's better safe than sorry and speak soft words and carry a big stick. .308/30.06/.273 are good calibers. If you are going to hunt in a wooded area maybe a good sidearm might fit the shoe. Let me know where you will be hunting and i might be able to help you better. Most of my pig experience is in Argentina but I have done some here in California.
Let me know if I can be of help.
Mike
