it wasnt pretty. we hiked and hiked some more. i think i know that property better on foot than in my truck. i didnt see a single pig. nobody did, except one particularly nice dude that was monkeying around with a camera instead of paying attention to his surroundings. his name rhymes with "messie". i swear i was going to hang with him that morning just to see him call some turkeys. if i did, i would have skewed one. he says they were within 15 yards!
flatbroke and bigworm showed up with dogs, and they came up empty. strangely enough, it seems to validate our hunting skills some. if the dogs cant find them.......at least that is my logic.
I HAD A BLAST! i got to do some 4-wheelin, saw turkeys, saw deer, ate food, drank,....see you guys next time somewhere. good luck to the next crew going up!
Never, never sit in prime hunting country without your weapon within easy reach! Things like that will happen everytime. That had to be tough to watch.
Ouch! in more ways than one. Nice video, hope the dogs didn't run them out of the county, hopefully they just went down in the hole they live in and will come out again next weekend!
pigs? i have seen hogs every time i been there, just havent been able to seal the deal yet, we will see what happens this Mothers Day weekend, saw over 40 boars last year on that weekend, their are trophy boars runnin around their for sure!.............tra
It was a great hunt and I thoroughly enjoyed every part of it. Dang pigs must have been on vacation cus it wasn't like we stayed around the cabin drinkin and watchin Jesse's video ALLLL day long. The way I look at it the pigs are just gonna be bigger for the next crew.
Thanks to all, and it was sure nice to put a face to the name. Great bunch of guys.
It was a cold, windy wet son of a gun, the hogs were also thin but I do have some stories to tell, most of them true. Met some new folks and heard even more stories, some also being true. Another fun trip to Chopper's. Actually my fini flight there, the last party.
I'll start this heartbreaker with that video of them 3 dern hogs. I was in turkey mode really, roosting some birds Friday morning at what they call Jamison's on Chopper's Mtn. All was fine, I found the old roost I knew about and hooted up about 4 gobblers right at blue light. They were upcreek this year and over a scoch, it wasn't going to be easy to get close this year to them without being seen.
I waited for light and the turkey's fly down to figure out which way they would head. Off to my right I saw a long black line I hadn't seen before just above the small creek, too long to be a stump. After a long study it didn't move so I grabbed another turkey call in the truck and started tuning it. I looked at that black line again and suddenly it moved.
BATTLE STATIONS!!!
It's a hog. All I can think about is Joe (Buck-eye from the forum here) sticking a pig in his flower bed in his front yard and how I can join that exclusive club for tough hunts. I figure this off the hood shot should get me in. I started reaching around for my longvbow when the hog perked up, looking right at me. I had to play sneek for a few minutes just to get my bow turned around and then find the camcorder. Then 2 more hogs popped out. The hogs were next to my right side truck door, maybe 10 yards away at one point. If I would've had one of them short wheelie bows I coulda shot right from the front seat. I was parked off the 2 -track in a field. Is that even legal in CA?.
The one gray faced sow catches me a couple times sliding the bow up to get ready to ease out the door. I shot the video real quick just to make sure that boys back at the cabin would know I wasn't yanking anyone. The wind was right for a sneak if the hogs would just move off a bit away from the truck so I could get the door open without spooking them. It was a "bandanza" as Curly from the 3 Stooges would say. Hogs, in range and unaware of you and the wind is steady in your favor.
I get the door open and slide out without detection. No rooting now, it's lawnmover action as the pigs are busy strafing the new green shoots. I can hear them pulling the grass like a cow, they are so close. I'm going for an over the hood straight into the boiler room if possible shot, no Kentucky windage needed, it's a chip shot.
As I peek over the hood I see the hogs have moved back of the truck to another oak tree and now I'm screwed. I can't see the hogs as the camper shell blocks my view. I try and bend over to see under the truck to where they are exactly and all the blood rushes to my head and I about pass out. I recover from the spins shortly, typical turkey hunt for me and the season ain't even started yet.
I wait a few seconds and then slide down, one step at a time to the rear tire so the hogs won't see my feet under the truck. The arrow is knocked and the Magnus 2 blade tip is shiny sharp. Killin time is here, not 20 minuntes into the first day of the hunt.
