Threw my application in as well. What is the average number of people that put in for these hunts?

I was thinking the same thing. I'm guessing the app rates are pretty high. I have applied for just about all of the special pig hunts in the last 6 yrs and have yet to draw. Who knows, maybe this will be my year.

Anyone know if you need a boat for this? Sounds like you can access it without a boat...

Search the forum. There are past members who have done this hunt. It is very marshy. You don't need a boat to get in, but you will probably need a helper if you get a pig, especially if it is down in the mud and the tules.

I seem to remember someone posting about this hunt, and if I remember correctly they did a fair amout of "crawling" for their hog.

Only 240 applicants thus far for this hunt (all periods). This might be your year...

It helps to bring a canoe or kayak if you have access on either. Makes bringing your pig out much easier. However, the hunt is not an easy one.

23-24th a little late but i will make the best of it. And i do have a boat to access other parts if it will help. Do the pigs get pushed out to the edges of the island after a few weekends of hunting?

You don't need a boat to hunt the island. You can drive on for the hunt. There is a large pond on the southeast side that has tule islands in it. It can be kind of deep and the mud is not fun at all. Some pigs hang out on the tule islands, or so I've heard from the duck hunters.
The majority of the pigs do hang out on the outer edges of the island. There are large stands of tules between the river and the island levee. Short of having dogs these pigs won't be seen.
Be prepared to do a lot of walking. Having some sort of game cart will help with pig retrieval. Pay attention at high tides, this will push some pigs out of the outer edges. Have fun, I have been on this hunt twice, once as a guest of a hunter and once as the hunter. Pigs were seen both times and I got got a pig with 3 1/2 inch tusks on my hunt.

i pig hunt a couple days a week at various areas and duck hunted joice island in january. while i did see alot of rooting and tracks and heard them squeeling throughout the morning i cannot imagine pig hunting there without dogs. It is going to be a tough hunt i would imagine doing drives will be about your only chance
