Hello all both my daughters were drawn for the joice island hunt next weekend. They have both been duck, turkey, and pheasant hunting but this will be the first big game hunt for the both of them. I have never been to joice island and from doing some internet scouting it seems like waders are highly recommended and the mosquitoes are thick lol. They will be shooting rifled slugs out of their smoothbore weatherby elements with carlson rifled chokes. My girls have no problem walking or hunting all day. Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Thanks Russ

Rolando is hopefully still the biologist there. He will give you a ton of info. Walk the entire perimeter. Look at the tide schedule as the pigs will get pushed out of the slough when the tide rises. They’re also in the super thick tulles near the bridge, but it's almost impossible to get in there. Bring a game cart and leave it somewhere in the middle of the property, so the drag isn’t as tough. It helps if you have a long pole, like a wooden closet rod, to help with pushing through the tulles, assist with walking through deep mud, and defense against ornery pigs.

It can definately be done . Even when its cold out , think light clothing layers . Trogging in the Tules makes you hot very fast . Contact the Biologists. They want the hogs thinned. Think about bringing a ladder for the back of your truck to glass from . Its flat and has 5 ft high Tulies everywhere. But there are pig trails. Dont wear hot, thick neoprene waders . Knee high waterproof is the best . I hope to see some good pics !! Back when I was a kid , my dad was the big game manager there .... mostly for the Elk. But I hunted Joice Island for ducks.
Get as much recent info as you can and dress in very light layers. Its a great Cardio work out .
It looks like you need some talks with Russ !!!! He will give you better info than I can these years .
