Please understand that this is just a question of interest. I have no intention of violating any F&G regulation; I'm just curious.

How does Fish and Game tell if a bullet is lead-free or not? Without cutting it open, how is it determined?
Thanks for enlightening me.

It is my understanding that if you have the box or whatnot, they usually assume that it is lead free. However, If memory serves me correct the new law allows them to take one of your cartridges and cut up the bullet to determine if it is legal.

Common sense is correct. However, an educated Fish and Game officer will be able to look at the cartridge and determine if it is lead free visually. They are pretty apparent.

They use a photograph, submitted by the manufacturer during the "certification" process. If it "looks like" the picture the manufacturer submitted, then it passes the "test".

There is no chemical test, or cutting, or anything else. It's totally visual, and based on the integrity of the hunter.

You can actually download the certification request form at the DFG site and see for yourself.

Yep, visual ID, but I bet if you cop an attitude or give them reason to doubt you, they may confiscate a round for verification.

The Nosler E-Tip has a very distinct OD (olive drab) tip found only on the E-tips. This tip color signifies it as a CA approved unleaded bullet.
