Finally finished my Boar Spear. Enameled the shaft to try and match Japanese lacquer finish. Wrapped both ends of spear for grip and added "Turk's-heads" to aid in preventing slippage. Kanji lettering to invoke the spirit of the hunter/warrior.

That's pretty cool, Ji. But no crossbar?

Can't wait to see pix of it in action! I think I'd like to try spear-hunting hogs sometime.

Good question. I wanted a spear that could double as a fighting spear (almost 40 years of martial arts background), and also a cross bar would be a hindrance in the heavy vegetation (allot of vines and tall grass) in the majority of habitat I hunt pigs so I went with what I feel is a more efficient design- I added a "tsuba" or hand guard just below the blade to prevent the "inoshishi" from running up the blade, and also to stop the sword of a rogue ninja should one jump me while I'm hunting boars.
<

Here's an earlier close up of the "tsuba" at base of blade.

You gotta wear a malo if you're hunting with that pig sticker!

Remember to post pix...

That would scare the pigs away and make my legs all itchy.

Those kagis you make are really nice too, it inspired me to make that crappy gaff. Nowhere near as nice as your stuff though

The handguard didn't look that big in the first pix...

And I HATE when those rogue ninjas jump me while I'm pig hunting.

Nice looking Boar Spear. I just flew out of HNL this morning, and now at home in California. I assume that your location is Kailua, O’ahu? When in Honolulu I usually stay at the Seaside, and travel the Pali Highway over to Kane’ohe Bay where I fish. At the very top (on both sides of the Highway) is open to Boar Hunting. (Archery Only). Absolutely no Dog and Knife hunting. Just wondering if you can use your spear up there on top of Pali? It’s open to hunting, but no hiking allowed. It looks great, but so far, I haven’t been in there. Just pass by each morning on my way to Kane’ohe.

Are you a guide?

Man, it's nice to see that you're alive and well and ready to get back in the pig-sticking game!! Has your back healed to the point where you can walk around now? I sure hope so.

What a fine looking piece of art your spear is. I'd like to have one of those to hang on the wall. I'm much too much of a chicken to try one of those things on a big, snarling, jaw-snapping Hawaiian boar. I'd have no reservations about using it on a boar as long as I've shot the boar a few times first and it's dead. Then, courageously, I'd jump in, assume my Ninja stance, say something Asian that means something to somebody somewhere, swing the spear over my head, do a couple of backflips, and then spear the sucker.

But a live pig, no way. I'd use the spear to pole vault over the lava wall and then I'd run home and cry myself to sleep.

You ought to make more of those spears and sell them. I'd buy one in a heartbeat. What a marvelous piece of art!!

Take care my friend. I really hope you can make it over to the Big Island. You've always got a place to stay and your choice of weapons. I'll gladly be your guide. Just give me a couple of months to heal so I can walk around OK.

Aloha Richard, I was raised in Kailua, Oahu but my Dad kept his boat at He'eia Kea on Kaneohe Bay so spent my weekends growing up on the Bay as well , fishing and diving during the mid 60s thru the early 70s before there commercial operations and drunk yuppies at the Sand Bar took over, a decent place to grow up back then. I have bow hunted Nu'uanu Valley since the very first day they opened it up for archery in the late 80s but never saw any pigs there while hunting but seen plenty when I'm not armed on the side of the Old Pali Road. Just moved back in September '07 after 12 years on Maui but not by choice, had to take care of estate things after my parents passing. Not a licensed guide but have guided just for the fun of it several times. Spears are legal for hunting anywhere but I would use it strictly with a pack of well trained hounds which would capture and keep a pig immobile while I administered the coup de grace.

Aloha Doc, Always great to hear from you. Sorry to hear about your recent injury, get plenty rest and let's do a hunt in a couple months, maybe bird season or even a overnighter wild cattle hunt, I have fantasies about popping a charging bull with my bolt action 45/70 using my 400 grain cast reloads. I will definitely stay in touch. I shall put you on my Boar Spear list I have a half dozen people on it so far in just a week, I can squeeze you in near the top. As far as spear hunting pigs I let the dogs do the hard part, and just walk up and poke the pig while the dogs hold it down then take all the credit.

Hey Ev, Your gaff is awesome, efficient, and economical, I just had more time to add the bling but I'm sure the fish don't notice the difference which is the main thing.

Uncle Ji,

Here is the link to my favorite Honolulu radio station. While here on the mainland I can listen to streaming/audio with my computer. I’m listening to Hawaiian 105 while I type this.

http://hawaiian105.com/

Boar hunting in Hawaii means a fire pit covered with banana leafs and a Luau. The most interesting hunting area seems to be just before the tunnel while heading north and then take the old road that circles around to the west back to the Highway. I guess that’s the Nuuanu Valley? No hiking allowed, so I haven’t been in there yet.

When you are better, lets go fish'n

Are you going to be back in shape for the weekend of Sept. 27th (?) San Jose State football will be at the University of Hawaii @ 6:00 pm, so my boy and I will be in Honolulu for the weekend. That kid of mine likes to sleeps late, so I could probably get away on Sunday morning for some fishing while he sleeps at the hotel? We have to fly home Sunday night, so he can be in class on Monday morning.

I usually go Bible meeting on Sunday mornings is a tad iffy, but I'll let you know as time gets closer. I'm not scheduled for back surgery until late October so before that is okay. Just curious what and how do you fish Kaneohe Bay?

Aloha, Ji
