Soooooooooo

I booked a lil vacation on Kauai for a week in Feb. and Kel says I should go hunt for a day or part of a day..........whatever she just wants to have a spa day and I know it.

So, is there any good info on the state web site? Or should I take my own advice and do a JHO search........which I did and got overwhelmed so I thought I'd start a post
<

Even if I spent a day hiking and got some sweet pics like Ev posts up I'd be a happy guy. It is paradise isn't it?

Any tips, idea's or should I just go surfing?

I have never checked out the hunting regs or options on the island, but I will before my visit at the end of the year. I was there two years ago. We went over to the west side of the island and hiked the Kokee State Park. Every trail had a fence on each side of it. On the other side of each fence were hog highways. There was hog sign everywhere.
I am headed over there again in December for a family wedding. My family keeps laughing when I say that I am packing my bow. But, then they realize who they are talking with and stop laughing.

FT, if you do, post up about the regs. I am thinking that if it is possible, I would rather be chasing a pig than wearing a tux. Hey, maybe I could provide a pig roast for the dinner after.

i spent a week on kauai. after awhile you just start exploring. first off, there are wild chickens everywhere. i think they are protected, but i bet a few have been "judo'd tipped". i went to a park, rec area, in the middleof the island. just standing there, a sow ran past with 5 piglets. they passed me at 15 yards. they look different from what i am used to. i think they are true wild pigs? not feral things. i wished i had something to hunt with. my wife thought they were cute.

I saw a house there that had at least 100 skulls nailed to it.

There was a hog hunting tournament on the local channel that was for charity on kauai.

I saw signs that indicated there are public hunting areas there.

You need to start your paperwork to get a hunting license. As a matter of fact, it may be to late. Ev Bouret or Doc Cherry should be able to give you some great pointers.
There are pigs all around, and Kauai Road Warriors (chickens) all over the place but I don't think they would be that good eating cause they come from cockfighting stock.
Have fun and enjoy yourself.

You do need to do your paperwork BEFORE going, but it's not too late, feb is a long way off.
First, you need to apply for a LETTER of EXEMPTION, mail or FAX a copy of your Drivers License AND a copy of your ORIGINAL hunter safety certificate, a hunting license is not accepted. This is done through the Honolulu office of DOFAW.net
Once you have your LETTER of EXEMPTION you can buy your HI hunting license in Kauai, or better yet, you can buy AND print your license online and save $10
If you plan on hiking the Na Pali coast trail (I would) you may need to look into reservations now, but maybe not being as your going in the off-season.

Thanks GlassEye

I was just reading all that info on the Hawaii web site, its an easy site to navigate but hard to find good solid info so thank you.

Gotta keep looking and make a decision soon but 95 bucks for a non-res license isn't bad at all. 10 bucks for a local.........crazy!

Yeah, a few years ago they really went up in price and gouged the non-residents. It was $10 res and $20 non-res.

Ok, you're lucky I read the board because I haven't been checking it lately. Unfortunately I moved to Oahu two days ago so I won't be there to guide you. Nic Barca is still there and he's usually down to go on an adventure. What type of hunting do you want to do when you're there? You can bowhunt, rifle hunt and probably go with some dogs if Nic hooks it up. As far as animals go, theres spanish feral goats, pigs and if you're there the right time of the year blacktail deer. Backpacking? One day hunts? Theres a bunch of good spas too on kauai...try a google search.

O’ahu is great. Are you going to guide on that island?

Here is the link to my favorite Honolulu radio station. While here on the mainland I can listen to streaming/audio with my computer.

Just got back from a week over on the island. We crossed paths with a man and his son who had attempted to hunt from the north end of the road at Ke'e Beach, on the Kalalau Trail. He gave up early because there were too many tourist hikers coming through the canyons on the Napali coast.
I did see goats up Waimea Canyon by the Pu'u Hinahina lookout.

Those road warrior chickens put the hurt on several vacationers who wanted to sleep in, in the early morning hours. Fortunately, we were on the second floor. The rooster would start crowing at 4:30am. I usually woke up to him again at 6:30am.

We got back to California on Tuesday. Did you find an economical place to stay on Kauai? I refuse to pay more than $89.
