Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officers assist in western Kentucky disaster relief

2/2/09

Frankfort, Kentucky - Conservation officers from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources are on their way to western Kentucky to assist the area's residents in the aftermath of this week's ice storms. Gov. Steve Beshear declared a statewide emergency Tuesday as winter storms cut power to hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians, many in the western part of the state.

"Fifteen officers from eastern and northern Kentucky are en route to western Kentucky at this time to support the National Guard and assist with storm-related damage," said Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett. "They are equipped with 4-wheel drive vehicles, ATV's, chain saws, extra gasoline and diesel fuel. They are well-equipped to work outdoors and assist where needed."

Western Kentucky conservation officers are already on site helping to clear roads and take residents to shelters.
"One of the most important things we do is support the Commonwealth," said Hank Patton, deputy commissioner of Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. "We'll provide relief by removing trees from roads and helping people get food and water."

Colonel Robert Milligan, director of law enforcement for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, said officers will assemble this afternoon at the National Guard Armory in Benton before moving into their assigned areas. He expects the officers to remain in western Kentucky for three days as relief efforts continue.
